D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter

I have a D-Link USB Wireless adapter DWL-122 that continually 'freezes' the GUI and requires a hard reboot. I only seem to get about 2 to 5 mins worth of web browsing before this happens in either Safari or IE.

This has problem has existed for a while and can be replicated both on a B&W G3 and a Dual USB iBook and happens when connecting to Airport Extreme BAse Station, Airport Card, US Robotics 8045G Wireless Acess Point.

This also has happened under 10.2.7, 10.2.8, 10.3 and 10.3.1.

I have contacted D-Link who sent me another unit with the same problem. They also emailed me new drivers 1.3.2 (have been using 1.3.1) with no sucess.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any solution to get this device to work?

My G3 iMac is using v1.4.7 of the D-Link driver on Tiger. It was working perfectly under 10.4, but since updating to 10.4.1 I've been getting problems. Firstly the speed slows noticibly after a couple of hours use, and secondly I get kernel panics nearly every time when I either shutdown the machine or reboot.

I did an Archive and Install Tiger installation, and whilst their are other USB devices on the same bus as the D-Link, it doesn't seem to make a difference if I plug the device straight into the iMac rather than via a hub.

well.. should I try it? I can't get my airport with adapter to work in my Imac G3 400 DV.. it won't recognize the network.. can anyone recommend this D-Link 122??
I just spoke with D-Link on the phone.. the Bridged Ethernet thing they have has to be configured with a PC... fo r those of you who have them.. that's not something I want to try out.. So I guess I'll try this D-Link thing.. I'm scared.. Dwight

I have been using the DWL-122 adapter for some time, currently with the 1.4.7 driver, in my G3 iBook.

It works fine in terms of using wireless internet. The problem is that when the computer goes to sleep with the adapter in it crashes the computer, so I have to restart. If I try to pop the adapter out of the USB slot while the computer is on, it creates a kernal panic.

Now, under 10.4.2, the menu bar icon has disappeared. Even when it was there, you still could not disconnect from the wireless mode so you could pop the adapter out without it crashing. The only option is to restart the computer and yank out the adapter when the indicator lights switch off as the computer restarts. I have tried reinstalling the drivers, etc. All the problems return without fail.

I have read through this thread and tried some of the items that people suggest but to no avail. I am going to try using the Apple Airport card. When I bought the DWL-122, I thought this wasn't an option, but one poster suggested a few companies that still had them in stock [Expercom], so I ordered.

In the meantime, if anyone has a suggestion for the DWL-122 that hasn't appeared in this forum, tell us!

I had the same problems many people here have. The system would crash when going to sleep, and I couldn't start up the computer with the DWL-122 plugged in.

I am on 10.3.9 so your mileage may vary, but I did the following and the issues went away.

Ran uninstall.command from the DWL-122 Driver folder.
Ran the usbDriver.1.4.7.All.pkg
Restarted the computer
Repaired Disk Permissions
Ran all MacJanitor routines
Ran CacheOutX
Restarted the computer

Problem solved. It takes around 30 seconds or so for the adapter to get going again after the computer wakes up, but it no longer crashes the system. I can also start up the system with the adapter already plugged in.

My guess is the key is to remove the previous driver installation with the uninstall.command but I did the rest just to be safe and because it never hurts.

Dear James,
I have the same problem with the stick as everyone else, so your solutions sounds quite intriguing, but I'm not that advanced in Mac
that I exacly understand what you mean:
The unistall.command - is that a command that I can rum from the xterm? And although I have found the prism ktex file, I can't find the DWL-122 FOlder - where is that located then?

Also wondered about CacheOutX - what is that?
WOuld be grateful for any advice!
cheers,
Veronika

i can anyone recommend this D-Link 122??

-----------------

yes. I own two B&W systems and this device works well on both of them (even under X.4)

They are not as fast as my laptop's internal airport card but they do allow me to run ichatav2.1 as well as ichatav3 under X.4 and all current internet browsers as well.

I purchased both of these DWL-122 from Tigerdirect.com for $19.99 each. I paid significantly more for my internal apple airport card on the laptop but both devices are able to access our apple airport base station perfectly.
