I need OS for Macintosh SE

Hi, I have a SE for some years. i'm looking for a floppy with the system on it (English or Dutch)
Or a method to make a floppy on a pc.

the model is M5011.

Some years ago I had the harddisk running, (it was stuck but with some methods i found on the internet it worked for some minutes.)

Thanks, Paul Wolbers, Netherlands

Hi Paul
you should try to make OS 7.0.1 disks(1,44 MB) to test your SE's drive.Look at the post downwards the cited-there the only 800K disk is the Tune-UP-disk! You can use HFVExplorer on PC(all from Jan!)
download of HFVExplorer
http://www.chip.de/downloads/c1downloads12995045.html
Some more:
PC to Mac file transfer:
http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/pc2mac.html
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13463
"You will need Disk Copy 4.2:
http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/D iskCopy/

Macdisk(with Stuffit)
Quoted"Go to this web page ( http://rrzs42.uni-regensburg.de/Macintosh/files/macftp.html ). Download the MACDISK.EXE file onto your PC. Prepare an empty 1.44 MB PC-formatted diskette via the FORMAT A: command in DOS or the "Full" formatting option under Windows (this is an important step). Run the MACDISK.EXE program on the PC (you may have to temporarily unload any anti-virus software to do this). Follow the instructions on screen. When ready, immediately eject the floppy (now automatically in a Mac format, ready for use in a Macintosh computer) and move it to the Classic. Drag-copy the StuffIt Expander installer onto the hard disk. Run the installation program."
IF this fails you can post/email again-I'm in Germany not far from the netherlands.
good luck

Denis,

Thank you for the kind words. I hope that you do not mind if I reply to this message by Paul.

Paul,

If you take another look at all the messages under the topic that Denis referred to, you will find that the text actually is aimed at a machine with an 800K floppy drive. Please note the difference between System 7.0 and 7.0.1. The British
b 7.0
link leads to a download site with 800K files (the 7.0.1 is 1.4 MB only, except for the System 7 Tune-Up file).

Unfortunately, it is not possible to use a PC with
b 800K
Mac disks. The reason is the variable speed required for this very format. With the proper software, using a special technique, one can write certain 1.4 MB Mac images to floppies on a PC, but that will not help you here. With 800K you will be forced to ask someone with a Macintosh computer with a
b built-in
floppy drive for assistance.

Thank you for your offer. But i already have floppies of system 6.0.8. is 7.0 much better??
I have the SE running, but there was the next problem; HD SC setup can't see the hard disk. i think it's broken.

I have another SCSI harddisk 1 GB. i'm going to try it in the SE.
Or won't that work???

I also put in RAM i had. so now there's 4 MB RAM in it.

I had contact with someone who wants to sell it, a powerpc 8100/80. i might do that.

I don't know wether system 7.0 is better-I updated my SE 1/20 followiung advice of Jan Hedlund/Denis Eddy. I thought it would be same work doing two sets of 800 k disk-and have offered this to someone searching for 800 k system 7.0-same forum. Did you use for take apart/RAM:
http://www.whoopis.com/computerrepair/MacintoshSE.pdf
?I only changed HD in the LC series with no problem-I think Denis Eddy knows all about that including size limitations.
Has your SE the old 800k-disk drive?
If you go on like that you will easily end up with some six ore more old Macs-like me.

Yes, i was looking in the PDF file that it was easy to change the RAM. I had been looking at the RAM on the motherboard before but i thought it was much work to change it, but the MAC SE is very smartly put together.
I have build many pc's from scratch with parts but now the Mac SE is a new challenge for me.
my SE has the 800K disk drive. When i have the 8100/80 PPC i will also have a diskdrive in which i can make my own floppies.
Then i want to find out all that is possible with the SE.

Question for everybody: can i put a 1 GB harddisk in a Mac SE???

Paul,

can i put a 1 GB harddisk in a Mac SE???

Since the hard disk is smaller than the maximum volume size allowed (2 GB before System 7.5), it should be possible to do this (without partitioning), provided that the dimensions and the connector are OK.

A word of warning: Working inside a compact Macintosh computer can be very dangerous. High-voltage charges may be present, also when the machine has been shut down and disconnected from the mains. Glass may break. Such work should be carried out by an expert.

As an alternative, the hard drive could be placed in a suitable case, connected to the external SCSI port.

Please note that Apple HD SC Setup is intended for Apple hard drives. For third-party drives, or for Apple hard drives that have been reformatted by a third-party utility, another program will (normally) be needed. Drive Setup 1.7.3 can handle certain non-Apple drives. Otherwise, look for FWB Hard Disk Toolkit, Lacie Silverlining or similar utilities.

The 8100/80 is not a bad idea. Both machines can be part of a LocalTalk-based network (or just directly connected, by means of a MiniDIN-8m to MiniDIN-8M printer cable; see this page for details).

Paul,

Before we continue, a couple of questions:

Do you have access to the aforementioned 8100/80 now?

Otherwise, where (type of floppy, external hard drive) do you have Drive Setup 1.7.3 and the other utility? What type of machine did you use in order to copy these files onto a disk?

Which hard drive is installed in the SE at the moment (the old one, or the 1 GB drive)?

I copied the drive setup 1.7.3 file with a pc. then i copied it with Transmac to a floppy (1.44).
Then i copied the file from the floppy to the 8100/80.
then i copied the file on the 8100/80 to a 800K floppy.

I started The SE up with OS 6.0.8 floppy. I put the 800K floppy with the file in the SE and installed the drive setup program. at the moment i have a miniscribe HD in it. (the 1 GB makes no sound at all, i think it's broken)

now i'm trying to copy OS 7.0 on disks. because one of the HD setup programs asked for OS 7.0

But there's another little problem. when i put a hqx file (the OS 7.0 is divided in 3 .hqx files to copy on 800K floppies)with Transmac on a floppy it changes to a .cpt file. When i copy it with the 8100/80 on a 800K floppy and try it in the SE, the SE can't read the floppy. maybe the pc does something wrong with the file.
I was thinking i could pack the hqx file and unpack it on the 8100/80. and then copy it to a 800K floppy.

Paul
Easy way-if you've got a CD-burner on your PC:
Download your 7.0 in one folder on PC,burn that folder at low speed to CD,insert CD in 8100/80,copy to desktop, then use Stuffit/Disk Copy to make the desired disks. You can also use Jan's advice, using local talk to the SE.
You don't need Transmac-just copy dowloaded files to PC-floppy,transport them to 8100/80(You can read PC floppies there!),copy file to desktop, use Stuffit -and Disk Copy to make your disk!
Good luck
