Drive Setup 1.7.3

Hi,

I have an LC 520, with a 2Gb pc SCSI hard drive.

If I am not mistaken, I have to use Drive Setup to use this hard drive.

I have downloaded the "Drive Setup1.7.3.smi.bin" file.

Only problem is, I'm having trouble extracting the ".smi" file out of the ".bin" file.

I have a mac classic, LC 520, and windows xp pc networked together via appletalk.

I tried aladdin expander on the pc, got the ".smi" file, but it wouldn't load when I loaded it on the lc.

Tried stuffit expander on classic, it doesn't recognise the ".bin" file.

I wanted to install stuffit 5.5 on the lc, but of course there is no where to store it, and I am booting OS 7.5 off floppy, not enough space on floppy.

So what I'm either asking is, where can I get a download of Drive Setup as an ".smi" file, or how can I extract it from the ".bin" file? My three computers (including pc via farallon adaptor and "pc Maclan") are appletalked together. I can use any of these to transfer between them over the network.

The mac classic is running OS 7.0.1, but unfortunately it has only 1 or 2Mb of RAM, so is VERY limited on what it can run.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Usually, one should not try to decode a .bin file on a PC. Here, the .smi "inside" contains a small program that makes the image self-mounting; this program will be damaged in the wrong environment. If in doubt, just wait with the decoding until on a Mac. On the Mac, drag the .bin file onto the StuffIt Expander program icon (do not double-click on the .bin).

Self-mounting images (.smi) are supposed to need System 7.0.1 or higher to function. I seem to remember that 7.0.1 created a problem in some cases though, and a newer system had to be used.

If I understand you correctly, the Macintosh Classic is the only one of your Macs running from a hard drive at the moment; is this correct? In principle, you could (temporarily) replace the system folder on the Classic with one from a Network Access floppy, but the small amount of memory installed may lead to difficulties.

1)You can use MacDisk.exe to transport Stuffit to the Classic(with disk)
2)You can use a PC-Disk to transport the Drive Setup-file(unchanged) to the Classic-you must use File Exchange there(start it before inserting the disk) to copy the file. You can then expand the Drive Setup file. Copy to disk with Copy 4.2- did work on my SE/Classic(OS 7.0).
Good luck

Thanks guys, I tried some of the things you mentioned, but lack of Memory on the classic, and lack of a hard-drive on the LC prevented me from achieving extracted the .smi file.

I just thought of this idea, and it worked! So here's what I did.:

I didn't have the right environment to install stuffit expander 5.5. Either lack of hard disk on LC 520, or lack of memory on Mac Classic.

My pc was the only thing that saved me. I couldn't of course extract the file with window's aladdin expander, but the pc had enough spec and power to do this job.

So I "emulated" a macintosh quadra 650 with softmac, and created a "virtual" drive, 30mb, and gave it 12Mb of ram.

To end the story short (without all details of disk swapping, file-sharing via appletalk, and moving files about)

I installed stuffit expander 5.5 into this environment.
I then extracted the self mounting image onto a spare mac floppy, and took it to the classic, and appletalked from the LC to the classic and double-clicked.

It worked!!! I now have a working LC 520, with modified connectors (since I broke the original connector, and replaced it with "pc" style connectors for the scsi cable and then had to solder on a pc style power connector for the drive) and now am running a 2Gb pc hard disk on the machine. I dragged the system folder from the floppy to the hard disk, and rebooted. No problems! Now I have the feat of installing system 7.5.3, and then updating to 7.5.5. I already have the files on my pc.

Thanks again appleiifreak and Jan, I just wanted to post this just in case anyone out there is stuck with a working pc and a macintosh that is a "work in progress".

If you don't have the right macintosh environment, emulate it! 😉 Then you can get your REAL macintosh working!

Hi, AppleIIFreak, here is how everything is setup:

Hi
Glad to hear you have managed to start!
I would be interested in the following:

How did your PC work with a Mac-disk?

- I had to create an "image" of the mac floppy within the emulator, and then write the image BACK to the disk.

-Also with appletalk working between mac and pc, file-sharing is really easy, no need to worry about "transmac" or doing many floppy disk swapping between computers.

How did you "appletalk" Xp PC to Mac?
- I have a "Farallon iprint adapter" which converts appletalk to Ethernet.

- Somewhere in this forum is a guide to setup the appletalk protocol on a windows xp machine, by gathering files from Windows 2000. I can email the guide to you if you wish, or even type it up here. I'm using it to use my "Laserwriter 4/600" on my Windows xp pc.

- I am also using a registered version of "PC Maclan". This allows you to file share between macintoshes and pc. Saves alot of disk-swapping, and "Transmac" program, etc.

(purchase full version)

These three things are how i got the whole network going.

How can you "emulate" the quadra on PC?

- There is FREE full version emulation software called "softmac" to emulate a macintosh on your pc.

http://www.emulators.com/softmac.htm

All you need is to download a suitable "ROM", I used a quadra 650 rom. You also need system software to boot off from floppy. You can then install it onto the hard drive.

I've got a PC,too(XP OEM),could not connect to macs!
Would be a great advantage to do this like you did!

I hope this helps. Let me know if you run into any troubles. I don't know too much about macs, (I'm a mac newbie) but I managed to figure out all of this, and it's all working quite well! 🙂

Hi Abdulfattah
Thanks a lot for the response.
1) You can email me the guide if it is no big trouble-my email is on the board(click AppleIIFreak).
2)MY MACs have ethernet-connection via hub to XP-so i do not need Farallon(got an old one to connect appletalk to ethernet, without TCP/IP)
3)I've got some MAC's to get the ROM-read the softmac-site.
Thanks a lot again
