International Keyboard Always Defaults to US

In the Keyboards settings can't you make the UK keyboard ON and the US keyboard OFF?

Yesterday, everything on my iPhone was in US English. So, I switched off all the English settings and everything switched to German. (I have a German iPhone) But now when I want to switch back to English, it won't go back. I've turned on every keyboard language. But, no luck. Even tapping on the globe symbol doesn't switch the language.

So, this doesn't really solve your problem. But it does answer your question: yes, it is possible to have the default as German.

In the meantime, I'll be trying to figure out how to switch back to English.

I've finally got the keyboard switching working better. Now, it let's me switch to whichever keyboard I want using the globe symbol. And, it remembers which keyboard I used last time and defaults to that one. The trick seems to be you need to reboot your iPhone after you make the changes in the system settings.

I have the same problem... and no you can't make the US keyboard OFF. The US keyboard switch is set to the ON position, but greyed out. The UK keyboard is also set to ON.

Any ideas? I've tried rebooting my iphone without success.

Go to Gerneral/International/ then set you language and keyboard there.

If you go to General/keyboard there you only set your keyboard.

Language already set to English (only other options are French, Italian and German - no UK/US). Region Format is also already set to UK.

I think I sorted it another way. Basically, I pulled up the Keyboard on Mail, and hit the globe icon. It seems to have remembered to keep my UK keyboard. For now, anyway...!

I think the "greyed out" option depends on where you bought your iPhone. I have a German one and German is "greyed out." So, I can select other languanges, but German is a mandatory one. Then I just click on the globe to switch between the languages.

Not directly an answer, but isn't this an amazing feature! I've been wanting a multilingual phone for many years as I text, mail in English, German, Frech, Spanish (please give us a spanish keyboard) and Dutch (please give us a dutch keyboard).....
