Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!

I get this incredibly annoying, semi-subtle single pop sound every now and then. At times, it happens a few times a minute. Other times it won't happen for up to ten minutes. It happens even with all programs off, and with the sound on or off (and no, it isn't from pressing the volume buttons). It likes to make the popping sound the second before it goes into sleep mode. I'm thinking it's either from the hard drive caching or trying to park, or maybe something with the power supply inside. I don't see anyone else experiencing this, which is odd because I had just returned a regular MacBook before buying my MBP and the MacBook had the same exact issue.

MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5)

LOL. i just got a new macbook pro (different the one i originally wrote about in this thread as that died), and it once again has the hollow pop noise.

its also a fijitsu

my other one just died, wouldnt boot up, even without the os cd - so i dont think it was a hd issue. so no idea if the mbp dieing correlated with the popping

anyway, i really cant be bothered to chase it up.. 2 computers in a row have had it so whatever

whyd everyone go quiet regarding this issue? Its soooo annoying. My 2nd mbp and it still does it. Fijitsu hd suck balls. Besides the hollow pop, they are also pretty noise when they do general reading of the hd when you open up a program or browse the web or pretty much do anything really - that annoying rattling sought of scraping on metal sound

i recently was given a used 12" Powerbook that had it's HD replaced with a 120gb Western Digital 5400rpm drive about a year ago.

it's running 10.4.11

i immediately noticed the hard drive parking sound every 20 seconds or so. after doing a ton of google'ing, i came across the HDAPM fix.

after installing the fix, no more parking sound. which i thought was GREAT.

BUT - i definitely understand the concerns about using the HDAPM fix. i've noticed a 5 Celsius increase in HD temperature, causing the fan to run much sooner than it normally does. and i'm also concerned about having the computer jolted w/o having the heads parked.

i wish i knew the lesser of the two evils. is it worse for the drive to have the heads continually parking? or worse off with the new MAX setting and additional heat caused by the HDAPM fix?

i also wish i knew of a drive that i could replace it with that lived quietly along with OS X.

Sigh. I dont understand how a 2,600 dollar machine could be sold with something so obviously defected as a popping hard drive. the sound is so irritating its not funny. i dont mind computers making noise, its part of there running process..... but a hollow metallic sharp "POP" that just seems to get RIGHT in your ear is not cool. as a pc converter this is disappointing to say the least

at times (in a quiet room trying to study) i feel like smashing my mbp.

It has been a while since I participated here but I subscribed to this post. Sorry APPLE has not made an effort to fix this problem. I hate this for all users and sorry for those poor souls that had made the leap from PC to APPLE. Shame on Jobs. I am back to working on my POWERBOOK both in the field and at home. Slow, yes, but purrrrrs like a cat. The new more expensive model (after having three consecutive models) went back and will unlikely return.
Shame on Jobs. Did i say that already....

I feel the same way as the last two posts about this. I returned three MacBook Pros over the course of a few weeks and dealt with a lot of 'looks' from genius bar reps as if I was a 'nit-picky' type that just can't handle a little hard drive noise. I'm glad they refunded my money but what a major inconvenience trying to explain a problem that is very difficult to physically show someone. It's a real issue that I would guess Apple is aware of by now and is either forced or just chooses to ignore for various reasons.

I know it's not an option for many but I continue to urge people to keep swapping out their machines, ask for refunds, swap out drives etc. as much as their time allows so that this eventually becomes an issue that is addressed.

I know what you mean greenbot about explaining this issue without coming across as some wanker customer who whinges at anything. As others have mentioned in this thread, some genius bar people have deemed it "normal harddrive noise". i in no way expect everything to be perfect.. but this noise just really gets on my nerve and theres no way in **** it can be normal. its such a strange noise... i dont know, maybe i just react bad to it... like some people react bad to nails screetching on a chalk bad... but its definately a weird noise.

as this is my 4th mbp in 3 weeks, i wont be taking it back so ill just be dealing with it. down the track i may consider getting the hd replaced if possible, im not sure what to do really.

it's no use to change the hd, it's the OS that operates this function of head parking;
i've learned to successfully apply the hdapm so don't deal with it anymore (but in boocamp);
i invite you all to try hdamp, it's not that complicated, i almost forgot of the blip noise,
only when i receive forum post notifications_

Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!
