Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!

I get this incredibly annoying, semi-subtle single pop sound every now and then. At times, it happens a few times a minute. Other times it won't happen for up to ten minutes. It happens even with all programs off, and with the sound on or off (and no, it isn't from pressing the volume buttons). It likes to make the popping sound the second before it goes into sleep mode. I'm thinking it's either from the hard drive caching or trying to park, or maybe something with the power supply inside. I don't see anyone else experiencing this, which is odd because I had just returned a regular MacBook before buying my MBP and the MacBook had the same exact issue.

MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5)

I have both of these infamous sounds. Definite pop with the turning on and off of the sound card. Especially apparent when using iChat when someone suddenly signs off, the sound card turns on, and you get a pop. Then the card will be on for a limited amount of time and you hear a hiss in the background, and then it shunts off and you hear silent until the cycle begins again.

I can tell when the hard drive is working due to virtual memory tasks. I think that is part of the problem. When idle, the sound is maybe every 10-15 seconds but when active during virtual memory (I'm already waiting for my replacement 4 GB of RAM from Crucial due to a separate issue) it is more often.

Just got mine (White MB) replaced within 14 days - very good customer service - this one has a different HD - a Hitachi - there are some quiet noises - but nothing annoying, or regular. So hopefully I'm set.

One very pleased customer!

Good luck to everyone else.

* Update - I think it is still there - less annoying - but I suppose once you start noticing - I think I'll leave it a few days and see what happens - will post back *

I'm leaving the initial post because it did seem to be fixed - I just didn't leave it long enough - and Apple were very efficient with replacing it - but then I suppose they should as I paid good money for it!

I have the exact same problem. A frequent (every few seconds) but irregular (occasionally stops for a while) "clunk" sound from the the hard drive of my MacBook. It has a Fujitsu 160GB HD.

I've tried Disk Utility and it verifies okay, but I have two concerns:

1. once you notice it, it's incredibly irritating when working in a quiet environment;

2. I'm concerned that it makes the hard drive more likely to die at any time, taking my data with it.

Has there been any progress from Apple on a firmware update or replacement programme to address the issue?

I'm so disgusted with this issue… I just got back from talking to a “MacDumba$$” at the Honolulu Ala Moana store…. Where the heck do they get these people?

I explained to this guy all about the hard drive parking issue and described in detail the problem we’re all experiencing even showing him this very posting. I finally convinced the guy to take my powerbook pro into the back for a little listen..

Not sure if it was the fat in is ear or maybe that he suffers from a litigate hearing problem but he didn’t “hear anything” (hard to hear when your chatting to a co-worker!) but could do a hard drive test if I was willing to leave the laptop for 3 to 4 weeks (evidently they’re really really busy.) Oh, yeah, please take my laptop for three weeks or so just to finally do a low level disk/sector scan an tell me there is nothing wrong.. NO THANKS!
This is my last PacBook Amateur!!!! Screw apple!

Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!
