Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!

I get this incredibly annoying, semi-subtle single pop sound every now and then. At times, it happens a few times a minute. Other times it won't happen for up to ten minutes. It happens even with all programs off, and with the sound on or off (and no, it isn't from pressing the volume buttons). It likes to make the popping sound the second before it goes into sleep mode. I'm thinking it's either from the hard drive caching or trying to park, or maybe something with the power supply inside. I don't see anyone else experiencing this, which is odd because I had just returned a regular MacBook before buying my MBP and the MacBook had the same exact issue.

MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.5)

While I think it's great that people still contribute and add to this thread, I must remind everyone that there are TWO different problems with the MBP discussed here:

1) The "electronic pop/crackle" from the speakers/line-out (as demonstrated a few posts above this one)

and

2) The "hard-disk frequent parking pop-sound" that clearly originates from the harddrive of the MBP. This is the issue that the HDPARM-program helps some people with.

Both issues are SERIOUS and none of them has been resolved or even adressed by Apple. That simply won't do.

Sorry, you misunderstood me and the file.

What you hear: The System "Pop"-Sound from Mac OS X, played periodically (~every 6 seconds).
Second 0 till 5: audio out in "sleep mode", silence
Second 5: First "Pop" played, audio awakes with dull "plopp"
Then, the "Pop"-Sound is played periodically, the werid noise changes everytime, randomly.
30 seconds after the last "Pop", the audio out falls to sleep with a dull "plopp" again, then silence.

This problem is independent of: battery / cable power WiFi / Bluetooth on / off, energy saving mode on / of, system reset. The weird noises are also independent of the current audio volume.

I got my new MBP about 2 months ago (new mac convert) and about 2 to 3 weeks ago, I began to hear the +clink, plink, ping pong ball on metal noise+. In a quiet room, the noise bothers the heck out of me, and being the extremely nit picky person that I am, I am both annoyed and concerned. I was happy to find this thread because it assured me that I am not crazy, but that doesn't make the sound go away. It definitely seems to make the clink most of the time, and sometimes it seems like every 5-6 seconds or so. I am hesitant to download the program that has worked for some of you. I am not sure if I will do anything at this point about it, but I just wanted to keep the thread alive and let you all know that it is still happening with the newest MBP's. This experience has made my Mac conversion less exciting than I thought it would be. I already had the superdrive replaced at the Apple Store due to a harsh noise it made when ejecting a disc, and of course the genius bar dude could not hear the metallic clink due to the noise in the store. Just wanted to add my story to the mix.

It wasn't until I read this thread that I really paid much attention to noises and "pops" coming from the left side. Not to say I've never heard any noises, just nothing that alarmed and/or annoyed me. There's times I have low music on and times I sit in quiet, but more so with music or with other sounds.

I believe what I hear is:

^ That is, the demonstration posted by NUeX: http://www.bluesalamand.de/noise.mov

My "pops" happen at about the same intervals and I really have to listen to hear them most of the time. Like I said, this thread really brought them to my fullest attention.

One thing though, when I was listening to the sound file above (at full volume): Are people actually hearing the high pitched "titinitus" like sounds that go on forever starting about midway in the file? Or did these sounds come about from the recording process somehow? I didn't notice anybody describe as such, just "high pitched pops". Because this would drive me crazy +for sure+ if my MBP was doing that. I couldn't go near it then. All I hear from mine is some subtle gear like movements and sounds like the pops in that file, only they seem far less pronounced.

So it's not a problem for me at all, there's no painful or irritating noises that are loud enough to distract me. My hearing is usually sensitive to such things, or at least that's what I always thought. It just sounds like normal operations in there. This is my first portable computer, bought it in May so I can't compare my experience with my MBP to other portables, Mac or otherwise. When I do take note of these subtle noises, I just figure it's due to closer proximity, as in more so than when I'm sitting in front of my desktop, which is an iMac G4.

It's a 15" 2.4 GHz Penryn MBP, w/ Hitachi HD.

Got my MBP last Friday, glad to find I am not crazy but bummed that others are hearing it and getting nowhere.
I would describe it as coming from under the left speaker area, and sounding like a can of soda being opened. Maybe something uncarbonated, or flat soda, as there is no fizzing noise. Just a slight criiick-TOCK! My wife says its like a pebble dropping into water. It happens randomly, maybe every 20 seconds to five minutes. There is no correlation with what I am doing on the computer, even happens while screen saver is on.
Just very bummed after scratching and saving $2000 to move up from a 500mhz winxp. I was so psyched up, of course I still am psyched, but a little let down that the dang noise is driving me NUTS!!

I swear, the ping noise is getting worse for me, more often than not, it does it multiple times in one minute, sometimes about every 5 seconds. When things are quiet, it drives me nuts, and I can even hear it over somewhat quiet music. Sorry if this is a wasted post, but I just felt like venting.

Does anyone else have the hard drive plink, ping, clink noise every few seconds like I am having?

hi all, i'm new to thread but i have bad news: my brand new Aluminum Macbook makes the pop noise. i have the fujitsu MHZ2160BH drive (160 GB). ****.

before this machine, i was the happy owner of two macbook pros (15"). they both had hitachi drives, a 120GB and a 160GB. no noise.

bwhile the problem seems to affect several drive brands, based on this thread, fujitsu might be the most common. i've had good luck with hitachis, so i may switch out.

Am I the only one with a blip/pop noise?!
