Kernel Panic & Hardware Test Error : 4SNS/1/40000000:TCOD

My Macbook Pro 17" C2D (2.4 Ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD) has been experiencing kernel panics at random.

The kernel panic log seems to refer to either one of these two things each time:

- Airport Atheros
- bad frame pointer

I have done a hardware test and resulted in a very peculiar error. I mention peculiar because I have tried to search everywhere for a similar error code, but to no avail. It's like as if I am the only one in the world... so I have no other case to base my diagnosis on. Applecare suggests it's a logic board problem but the logic board has already been changed once. I experience panics in both clean (erase & install) versions of 10.4.10 and 10.5 (Leopard).

The error code is : 4SNS/1/40000000:TCOD

This is not a good sign. If Apple service center or phone support can't make the kernel panics go away, I don't know what to do with this 17" white elephant. It's too panicky for work or play. It's a very very draining experience...

Anybody else has experience with this error or has any idea what I should do?

Note: I have tried resetting PRAM, not installing 3rd party applications, keeping a log, new users log in, MEMTEST and etc.

It sounds like a logic board problem. 4SNS errors indicate a sensor or logic board problem. If already reset the NVRAM and other basic troubleshooting take it in and get the logic replaced.

I got the TCOD error code from the Hardware Test I performed on the Installation Disc 1 that came with the MBP. I am very sure it says TCOD and just ran the test again to reconfirm.

A sample of my panic log reads:

Oh, the 2GB RAM on the MBP came from Apple. So I hope if they were to blame the RAM, they'd replace it too. 🙂

But I do hope the kernel panics go away after the second logic board replacement. It's so strange to get a "bad" logic board after another. If the kernel panics persist, I don't know how many more logic board changes I can endure.... the downtime, the backing up and repetitive travel (as anyone who's had multiple visits to the Applecare centers can attest to), can be very tiring.

Thanks for the replies so far, I really appreciate your generosity in sharing knowledge and thoughts.

I am assuming my logic board has multiple problems.

Nov 12, 2007 10:21 AM in response to kenny.teoh

Thanks for the link. It's interesting.

I do use Azureus. Have stopped using it for a while. But the kernel panics has happened even while just watching Quicktime trailers. In any case, the TCOD hardware test error still won't go away and continues to linger as a possible indication of something bigger?

I will eliminate that with a logic board replacement first.

But not that it's completely related - I sincerely hope if the problem really is Azureus maxing out the Wi-Fi connection causing kernel panics... that the worst case scenario doesn't happen :

"Apple might still not acknowledge the problem as their responsibility and Azureus continues to think neither is it theirs to fix (because they can't or won't), then the consumers will be the biggest losers."

I had gotten that error and ran the test again for the error had not reappeared. I will get kernel panics anytime I spend too much time editing photos in Aperture. There is no consistency to my kernel panics. I just recently have noticed red dots on my screen that tend to take or black pages. When using the web black pages will tend to get red tracers when I scroll due to this red pixel problem.

Oh dear. Sounds like you've got even more serious issues with your MBP. It must be really frustrating to have it KP on you while editing photos. I for one noticed something equally frustrating- a problem which has been talked about a lot in the forums... "the first letter missing syndrome". And it is worse for me, as I am a writer.

I am bringing mine in for a logic board replacement soon. Hopefully that should fix the kernel panic problem.

Will keep you posted.

Ok, it's official. My kernel panics may not be related to Azureus.

My Black Macbook has NO Azureus and it just panicked for the second time. It's newly clean installed with Leopard and I have only installed VLC on it. The Macbook has never KP-ed before in 10.4.10 or 10.4.9. This is a disappointing fact. I may not like everything else about Windows Vista, but it has never hung on me (yet).

I'd like to boast reliability on the Mac OS but problems with both relatively latest C2D Black Macbook and C2D 17-inch Macbook Pro is leaving me with a bitter Apple.

What do I have to do to be able to use my Apple computer for work reliably, seriously? Lug around a 8-core Mac Pro? Something is really wrong with the Apple's hardware drivers (especially Airport Atheros) or Leopard's codes... ADMIT IT APPLE, AND FIX IT.
