TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I want to select the picture and select email and then send the picture. It appears to do that, but then the email message never appears. Should I start a new thread?

What's weird for me some of them do and some don't, can't see the library outside of iphoto any more to attach them another way either.

Using iPhoto 08, right?

There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.

1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.

2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.

3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.

This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS

If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.

If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS

Also, for 10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.

Tried all three of those and none work. It is new with iphoto '08, I followed all the instructions and have a back-up if necessary, but am afraid to try anything for fear of messing it up worse. The problem is only with some pictures not all.

The contextual menu is what you get when you Control-click on an item. It may be the permissions issue that TD pointed out. Let us know if BatChmod helps.

Can I just repair permissions using the Apple Utility. The Arbysoft site says not to use this unless you know what you're doing, and I admittedly do not.

The Apple Disk Utility does not correct permissions within the Users folder. It's only geared for the system and applications.

The warning is in regards to applying it to system files. I don't use it anywhere but inside my User folder. If you're concerned, make a temp backup copy of the library, apply BatChmod to the first library and give iPHoto a try. You'll always have the backup copy to fall back to if it doesn't go as expected.

Also I suggest you download and run the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC) followed by a repair of permissions with Disk Utility. Also make sure you're running the latest version of Quicktime, 7.3.

No, that didn't work, new info, when I double click on the image I get an exclamation point. I saw a thread before on that, but can't find it now.

That exclamation point is a sign that iPHoto has lost the link to the full size version of that file. If there are only a few you can probably fix it by finding the full sized file inside the library package, copy it to the desktop, import it and delete the broken link version from within iPhoto. If there's a lot then you're looking at creating a new library and importing the Originals folder from the old library as follows:

Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.

1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
   
2. Open the library package like this.
   
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
   
4. Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

Did anyone solve this issue? I'm having the same problem with Leopard, Iphoto wont do the standard "hit the email button and open the photo in an email" Now,NOTHING happens when i select the photo and hit the email button in iphoto.
