Stuck on Grey Screen.. Won't Boot

I downloaded updates for itunes & quicktime yesterday.
My MBP asked for shutdown or restart.
I hit restart, now it won't boot.
I'm stuck on the grey screen with the spinning wheel.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

try booting into safe mode by holding down the key while you start. If this works, you can run permissions repair. You can also insert the system DVD and reboot from it to run permissions repair and disk repair.

So the exact same thing happened to me when I updated, not having done so for a while. The new install continually crashed my computer so I opted to install a previous update. I don't know what happened exactly but I can't get any of your suggestions to work. I am also in Taiwan with no access to any DVD boot disks, and was hoping there might be a way to do it through code, its been a while since I used DOS and I hope I didn't screw anything by trying to relearn by trial and error. PLEASE HELP I NEED TO GET IMPORTANT INFORMATION OFF SO I CAN GO HOME. I apologize if this is in the wrong going on 36 hours straight. THANKS AGAIN. I also don't know what version it was that I was trying to update then downdate to so sorry if the below info is incorrect
