Can't buy ringtones in iTunes

I can't seem to buy a ringtone in iTunes anymore. When I try to buy the ringtone, it says "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."

Well, my network connection is fine. I'm entering this right now on the "network connection". I can also purchase and download songs on the "network connection" that iTunes says is not working.

I'm not sure why iTunes and the iStore is barfing on ringtones and not anything else. Anyone else having this problem? Is this a feature to stop people from wasting money buying ringtones?

I'm not using Windows, but in any case the error message is different.

On iTunes 7.5 under Mac OS X 10.4.11 my error was:

+"iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."+

While the Windows error message in the Apple iTunes article ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93440) reports that the error was:

+"Could not complete your iTunes Store request. The store may be busy. Check your Internet connection or try again later."+

Ok, so I just figured out what was going on and why it wasn't working for me.

In your music library (not the itunes store) View>View Options and make sure the Ringtones box is checked. Then allow iTunes to check your library to see which songs have ringtones available, accept terms and conditions, then click the bell button that appears in your itunes library.

The "Ringtones" View Option seems to only show if you have selected certain items on the left hand side of the iTunes browser. What I mean by that is the "ringtones" view option seems to be a conditional item in the View Options menu. I.E. You can't see it if you are looking at podcasts.

I know that I can see the "ringtones" view option when I have first selected "Purchased" items under the STORE area. You can also select the ringtones view options when you have selected Music under the LIBRARY area and see the ringtones option.

This action called "allow iTunes to check your library to see which songs have ringtones available..." seems to only occur under this circumstance below:

Under View>>View Options, if you don't have the "ringtones" box checked, then when you do check this option, iTunes will pop-up a message saying something like: Do you want to check to see which store items have ringtones?

I think this is the only time this happens and I have not found any menu item or any other place where this action can be requested, so I think it's only when you first select the "ringtones" view option.

If you don't see the "ringtones" view option and you have the latest iTunes version, then make sure you have selected something that would have ringtones, like Music under LIBRARY or Purchased items under STORE.

Does anyone else have any other information on this or any insight as to how this works?

The original reason that I started this thread is because of the error message which happens when you move the mouse over the bell in the iTunes store and press the mouse button. You will still receive the error talked about in the first post. While this is still the case, there is another way to buy a ringtone and that appears to work and is described above.

Since you have to purchase the song in order to purchase the ringtone, then as long as you follow the instructions on checking the "ringtones" setting in the "View Options" under the View menu item in iTunes, you should be able to purchase the ringtone as long as the ringtone bell icon shows up in your Purchased music list for the itune item in question.

I have got past the network error message only to find it will not accept my password and account information.
I get "Please log in with the same account that you bought the song with" which is the same. Just upgraded to most recent OS 10.4.11 upgrade. Are they working on this problem?
