Using Internet Sharing on Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with the iPhone

Hi,

i like to use Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro 17" (intel) with OS X Leopard.
Enabling Internet Sharing on Leopard works just fine. I share my Ethernet Connection with the Airport.

I can connect to the Airport sharing the connection with multiple devices.
It does however not work with the iPhone.

The phone can see the network. It even connects and gets its lease (IP Adress / etc)...

I did open a terminal and did ping the iphone. Doing that i disconnected the iphone from the wifi network and connected again. I found out that immediately after connecting the connection is working (ping reply) for about 2 or 3 seconds and then there is no reply... Sometimes it is working... but 99% of the connections dont work... (working for 2 seconds and then no reply)

This is only with the Internet Sharing on the Macbook Pro (intel) in combination with the iPhone. I did not have any other wifi problems with the iPhone or with Internet Sharing on my Macbook Pro.

Regards,
somi

Hi Zoran,

yes. That works well... But you are using computer to computer mode (adhoc) on the airport then, right?

What i think is not true is that services on the mac book are accessible during a internet-connection sharing session.
Because when using internet sharing you will not be able to ping your iphone after a few seconds if you are facing the problem discussed here.

I was having the same issue as most other people partaking in this discussion have mentioned. I was able to connect to the airport network on my Mac without any problems, but I was only able to browse a page once or twice on the iPhone, and then only for about 10 seconds, before the connection went dead.

That all changed once I upgraded the iPhone from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2. Now I'm able to browse the internet, iTunes music store, YouTube, e-mail... you name it.

I had the same problem some hours ago and tried every solution mentioned in this thread, but it only worked sporadically. After hours of testing I found an odd solution (OS 10.5.1):

prerequisites: Airport off, Internet Sharing on (password not stored on the iPod touch), WiFi off
1. iPod touch: Turn WiFi on
2. Mac: Turn Airport (and thus Internet Sharing) on
3. iPod touch: Search for WiFi networks, but don't login
4. Mac: Overwrite Internet Sharing settings with "Create Network". Use the same network name you used for Internet Sharing, but another password. This password should be stored on the iPod touch.
5. iPod touch: Immediately try to login to the network manually all the time (there will be some failures) until the iPod touch manages to automatically log in.

Now WLAN should work, at least it does with my MacBook and my iPod touch.

Has anyone tried just renaming the network? I had mine set at the default of "pharrett's computer".

While other computers could hit and use it, the iphone could not get to any websites. I changed the network name to "macbook prowifi", and now it works great. Maybe the iphone has problems wifi networks that use spaces or other symbols/punctuation in the name?

So I am having the same issue with my iPhone and MacBook but I don't want to go to 10.5.2 yet as there is no support for one of my essential programs in 10.5 (and I do have a copy of 10.5 ready to go when there is support).
So I am stuck with 10.4 for a while, is there any solution yet??

I do not have this problem at all with my PowerBook 15", everything just works great but I don't want to carry around 2 laptops ...

Looks like I'm being forced into 10.5.2 ... I will wait a week and see if anyone else has an answer for 10.4 ... I doubt it though ... I have also called Apple Support here in Australia about this so I am just waiting for them to get back to me and tell me to upgrade to 10.5.2 ...

I really don't understand why it doesn't work, it is perfect on both of my old PowerBooks with Tiger ...
