I got an airport extreme to be able to do ichat video chat, but I need my password to download, so the thing normally pops up, and i type the password, so It pops up, and the username isnt there, and I cant remember my user name, and I HAVE TRIED ALLLLLL POSSIBILITIES!!!! and it wont work. So i find this article in the help app in my mac about changing admin passowrd, and it says to put Leopard disc in, restart comp, and wait for the tone, press C, and then let go when you see the spinning gear. I HAVE TRIED THAT 6 TIMES and it doesnt work. Any help?

Not sure the exact problem you have here. On the title you said you forgot password then in the body you said you don't know your user name but you typed in your password. Okay, if you know your password but can't remember your user name I have to say that will be very very easy to find. Go to System Preferences>Accounts. Your user name should be there. User name = Account name. Oh yeah, the top most account "should" be the administrator account. I have heard of this glitch, just forgot how to fix it.

Not sure if you were able to boot from the CD or not, You didnt say in the notes. So Ill start from the begining. With the CD in the drive and computer is OFF, Hold the C key down hit the power button and when you see the apple Logo let go of the C key, It will take you to the Installer. After you select English continue 1 page forward only, You will then see the Utilities menue at the top left side of the screen (not the small window). Click that and there you will see the RESET PASSWORD, Type in new password and confirm, Then Save of course and close the 2 windows as you would if the system was in OS, It will then give you the option to Restart. Should be good to go after that. Good Luck 🙂

Non Admin Accounts:

-Boot to single user Mode: Hold the apple key and the letter S, Hit the power button and keep holding the apple key and the letter S down, (When you see a few S’s being typed in Darwin, Delete the S’s).

-(Type) mount –uw / (then Enter key)
-(Then type) rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone (Enter)
-(Then type) exit
The computer will then restart and come to a screen as if you just bought the computer allowing you to create a new Admin account. Follow the steps and at the Wireless part hit…Different network setup then My computer does not connect to the Internet, since we will be deleting this account when done. This will be a Temp user.
-When done with the registering part and selecting a picture you are in as an Admin Account
-Go to the Apple on the top left, click system preference, and then Accounts, You will see your old account as standard and the new one as an Admin.
-Click the lock on the bottom left and use the new Password to unlock
-Then click the old account and on then bottom right click MAKE THIS USER ADMIN J
-Close the lock and Log out from the apple menu
-Log into the Old Account, same old password and in same case’s the new password
-Once in old account go to the Apple and select system preference and then accounts again. Open the lock and select the new account made, after that is selected hit the – above the lock and Delete account.

And then there ya go, You are now an admin again from upgrading - 10.4.11 to 10.5
I hope this works and if you have any questions post here please and ill try to reply ASAP.

Gale,
second try! You don't say what you have tried and I am not sure what problems you have asid e from the user downgrading. Here is an apple fix that allows you to delete the authentication authority (PW) and then set a new one. Make sure you have the user names and the 'old' password ready because of the potential keychain problem alluded to. If you have forgotten old PW you will have to post later to ask how to make the KC password same as the user PW.
The apple fix involves single user and some esoteric syntax so if all you have is the user downgrading try what I did. Use a boot from the CD to invoke the 're set password' utility from the CD. Choose to re set the root password (not 'other' but root'). Note the PW set for root. Boot into the HD and login to root. Use system preferences in root to look at the earstwhile Admin users. Use root to edit them and make them admin. Log out of root. Log into main admin. Go to "directory Utility" (the replacement for the Netinfo Database). Use DU to disable the root account. It is a safety measure to have root disabled.
