Installed 10.5, now when I click on "Secure Empty Trash" in the Finder, the small, "emptying the Trash" widow opens and the bar starts to move as if it is emptying the trash. However, it lists MORE items than are in Trash and it just runs continually (I have left it running overnight, 9 hours). It will NOT respond to "Stop emptying the Trash" when clicked. Since it is continually running I can not Restart or Shutdown. If I Force Quit, it only shows the Finder not the Trash. I have repaired permissions. I have to hold the Power button down in order to Shut Down. When I restart sometimes the Trash is empty and sometimes it is not...
This is a known bug in Leopard, and not resolved by the 10.5.1 update. You can quit and relaunch the Finder so you don't have to manually power down the computer for now. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon.

I have also run into this problem and could not relaunch the finder at all, or at least it didn't stop the trash from trying to empty. When I powered on then off it would still be running or acting the same. I got it to stop by powering off and then unplugging the power source. Once I turned it all on again I could resume my normal business. Very strange if you ask me.
If you ever have problems with Finder or Dock not displaying things right or stalling, in Terminal, type, "killall Finder" or "killall Dock" and the problem will be solved. Also, CDs that won't stop spinning 'cause Finder's seeking through them can be stopped using the killall command.
