How do I creat a network between two Macs?

I have tried to build a network between my wife's laptop and mine (in order to do the iPhoto Library Management): I tried with Airport and with an ethernet cable. For a short time my laptop shows (in Finder) something like "My workgroup" and "My network", but that disappears after say a second.

I have also managed to see my wife's "Drop Box", which is in her Shared Files, but that's as far a I get.

I thought that essentially I'd get access to her files???

I assume that the problem lies less with the network, but with settings specifying a firewall, or what files can be "seen" or "hidden".

Any pointers to solutions would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,
Veit

Dear Imac007 and Magus,

The pointers from both of you were very helpful, I read them all (it seems that the major problem was that I had not turned "Apple Talk" on), and now I am able to share the files on my wife's laptop, but, and I'll be "darn", NOT vice versa!??! :-(((

On her laptop (a MacBook with Intel Duo) in Finder>Go>Connect to Server and entering either the afp://-appropriate address or browsing, I will "find" my laptop's name, click on it to Connect, a window opens up with my laptop's name and the "Select the volumes to mount" request, but NO volume name appears there.

Strangely enough, when I create additional (fictitional) Accounts on my laptop (Preferences>Accounts, +), these new volumes DO show up in the above mentioned window and I CAN mount these volumes!??? This puzzles me on end: why can I see additional accounts, but not my main account, i.e. the admin account on my laptop?

Is there perhaps a setting somewhere that "hides" my account? But I have checked practically all the settings and compared them between the two computers, they seem to be identical.

HELP, can you please HELP? I am going nuts. 🙂

Thanks and cheers,
Veit

Since it works with another account, I suspect if you drag these files to the Desktop, (for easy replacement if it doesn't work), then reboot & set up Networking again, you'll be good to go...

/Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

Most likely the 2nd one, but...

I did as you suggested; first on my Mac (which could not be seen and mounted on my wife's Mac): since this did not help, I did the same procedure on my wife's Mac (the one that could be recognized on mine and mounted), but also to no avail. The situation remains the same.

Since I can create an additional account on mine, and even allow it to administer the Mac, could I essentially create a new "main account" for myself, copy (or "move") all files over, and finally delete the "old admin account". Would this be a workaround solution? If so, how would I copy/move all those files. Or am I courting disaster with this approach?

Any other preference files to delete and recreate as a simpler solution???

Your advice is MUCH appreciated.

Thanks and cheers,
Veit

Magus,

the "Communicating with other computers wirelessly" states:
QUOTE
To create an AirPort network other users can join:

1. Open Network preferences and choose AirPort from the Show pop-up menu. Click AirPort and make sure the "Allow this computer to create networks" checkbox is selected. UNQUOTE

But my OS X (10.4.11 version) does NOT have a "Allow this computer to create networks"checkbox.

Is this perhaps the rootcause of my problem?

Thanks for advice.

Veit

Thanks, Mort, creating the network (as you described it) works.

The problem remains, as described above, that the main account (i.e. me as the administrator of my laptop) cannot be "seen" on my wife's laptop, hence also not mounted. And all that, even after I did all the procedures suggested by BDAqua above.

I hope that you may have some more suggestions for possible solutions!?!

Cheers and Thanks,
Veit

There also may be a number of files like...

~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.<ethernet MAC address>.plist

On the new Admin Account, if I were to go that way, I'd leave that first account there, then maybe use BatchMod to change that User's User Folder & enclosed item's permissions to the new one's... not certain how OSX responds to the 1st user, (#501), not being there. Of course logging into that old account after changing the permissions could have bizarre effects. Of course you could just duplicate that folder somewhere and change permission on the copy I guess...

I did delete (and later restored)the file you mentioned on MY laptop, but it makes no difference.

Which raises the issue: on which Mac should I make these changes: on my wifes (where the admin user of my Mac cannot be seen) or on Mine (where I can see my wifes laptop with all user accounts)?

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers and happy Thanksgiving.

In you initial post, it looks like you had Windows Sharing enabled, if you wish to connect that way try from hers...

Finder>Go menu>Connect to Servers...

then type in...

smb://ip.of.your.laptop

If Personal File Sharing is enabled on both then use...

afp://ip.of.your.mac

on which Mac should I make these changes?

I've forotten which is which, but on the one that can't be seen by the other.
