How do I creat a network between two Macs?

I have tried to build a network between my wife's laptop and mine (in order to do the iPhoto Library Management): I tried with Airport and with an ethernet cable. For a short time my laptop shows (in Finder) something like "My workgroup" and "My network", but that disappears after say a second.

I have also managed to see my wife's "Drop Box", which is in her Shared Files, but that's as far a I get.

I thought that essentially I'd get access to her files???

I assume that the problem lies less with the network, but with settings specifying a firewall, or what files can be "seen" or "hidden".

Any pointers to solutions would be highly appreciated.

Solution found, specific problem not solved but worked around!

I now can "see" and mount my wife's laptop on mine (and vice versa), when I log in (with afp://10.0.0.4) as a REGISTERED User and with HER Name and Password (while using HER name sounds logical, my name was already in the box, hence I also used MY password, and, of course, could NOT connect). [I still can't "see" my admin user account on hers (only the "second" user can be seen) if I log in as a Guest, rather than Registered User, but that is a moot point now).

I think they can, at least by logging in as Registered User (with the same Name and Password) as the owner of the other Mac.
