Macbook Pro Unable to Burn DL DVDS

I'm sure that my MacBook Pro has the ability to burn DVD-DLs. But everytime I try to, it fails in Toast.

Looking into my System Profiler, I don't see DVD-DL support anymore:

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:

Firmware Revision: AP09
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 0 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Any help?

And what does "Apple Shipping Drive" mean?

THANKS

2.4 Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Hello,

My MBP purchased Dec.12-2007 says it can burn both + and - DL.

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:

Firmware Revision: ZA0E
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

I have burned successively with a Mitsubishi DVD - R DL but have not done any + R DL yet.

I don't see where anyone is describing what brand of DL media they are using. The only brand that works consistently with most DVD drives is Verbatim DVD+R DL. This can be due to the drive's firmware as well as to media quality. The errors mentioned in prior posts, including the hardware error, are typical for when a drive has difficulty burning to a DL disc that its firmware isn't supporting. Unless Apple issues a firmware update for this drive I recommend using only the Verbatim DVD+R DL media. In order to burn at slower speeds using Toast wait until the disc is recognized by Toast before setting the burn speed.

I had the same problem and went through all the threads for a solution. I tried everything under the sun, saving an odd recommendation that kept popping up in the discussions for last: use a cleaning cd because during transport or packaging the player head might have accumulated dust.

After all failed, I desperately inserted a cleaning cd (you can buy those for cd players) with a brush attached to the inferior surface. A voice tells you that you have to listen to a tune and then move to the last of 5 "songs", It takes about 2 minutes. The cd popped out and I was appalled to see that the drive had apparently torn out all the brush hair (destroyed the cleaning cd so to speak)! I thought that I had definitely ruined the DVD drive but low and behold it has been working like a charm since burning DL-DVDs flawlessly. Do not ask me where all the brush hair went.

I'm experiencing the same problem with my one month-old MBP. My MBP supports burning DVD+R DL discs as shown in the System Profiler:
http://i30.tinypic.com/293dmaa.png

Presently, I've tried three different methods of burning a 7.6 GB iDVD project to a DVD+R DL using both HP and Memorex brand DVD-DLs: twice using iDVD, once using Burn, and once using Liquid CD. (For the latter two methods, I was attempting to burn the VIDEO_TS folder that I had created using iDVD.) Burn and Liquid CD both gave me error messages stating that the burn had failed, and iDVD would eject the disc immediately after starting the actual burning process and would just continue to run like nothing happened.

After the burns have failed, the System Profiler shows that my MBP does not support DVD+R DLs:

This is very frustrating, especially since there doesn't seem to be a workaround or solution to the issue. Plus, DLs aren't cheep! The only thing I have yet to try is burning the VIDEO_TS folder using Windows software. We'll see what happens.

I'm having the same probs as everyone else (surprise!). How many more intel MBP owners need to say this before someone at Apple acknowledges there is a problem in sw or hw and that this is not because of user dumbNess?

According to Apple My DVD drive CAN burn DVD DLs + and -. Its what i paid for. I'm running 10.5.2, i have an HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N. HERE'S THE DEAL: I can NEVER successfully burn a DVD DL in any OSX App without getting this same error "TRACKING SERVO ERROR". I do have a lot of cool $2 coasters in many brands though!

The difference in media brands and dirty optics just aren't the source of the problem in these new machines!!!! if it were, the win xp bootcamp burn successes wouldn't be possible too, and I'm sorry but 'parts shifting during shipping' is not working with me either. This is obviously a problem with hardware and drivers. Can someone please provide an answer that holds some water? its either that: or we all need to go the faulty ipod battery route.

Yes i am frustrated. what's the real deal with this obviously replicatable issue?

Well, count me among those with the same problem. I haven't tried -R DLs, but haven't had any luck with DVD+R DLs, although I think I succeeded with some burns a few months ago.

I'm still in Tiger, while I wait for my recording software to be ready for Leopard. Is this all coming from people with the same model drive?

Just adding my name to the list, in case Apple ever comes here. MPBP purchased in Oct 07, could never burn DL. Now, only burns Verbatim -R (+R and any other brand do not work, after the firmware update of a few weeks ago.)

Definitely something wrong with the hardware. A coworker who had a PB a year older, and one a month newer had no problem burning DLs. When I searched in November, I found no other complaints...now there are a ton from the same time.

So I just got off the phone with Apple concerning this very problem and the fact that my System Profiler changes from time to time and says that my MBP only supports -R and -RW media. The Apple Tech had me do a power reset (unplug, remove battery and hold down the power button for 5 seconds). This fixed my system profiler for the time being, but so did zapping the PRAM earlier. After that, he gave me a case number and said if the problem persists, call back and they will have to replace the drive. He did not at all seem surprised that I was having this issue.

just thought i would share the info.

Ah, guess it's not just me!

I came here to post about this problem -- I suddenly cannot burn using Verbatim +R DL media, previously my most reliable media. I've tried Toast 8, Disco, and Disk Utility -- all give me an error with the disc when I try to burn. DVD-R works fine, as does CD-Rs.

Here's my MacBook Pro info (MBP 2.2 GHz, 10.5.2). Curiously, it still lists DVD +R DL as being a compatible format. Doesn't work though -- very annoying. I have about 50 blank Verbatim DVD +R DL left over from when they used to work 😟

For all of you reading this thread:

Faulty optical drives can be replaced under Apple's warranty if that's where the problem is.

If it's software related I strongly advise that you provide feedback at this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Apple's techs apparently keep a watch on our comments and attempt to replicate & resolve the problems. The more people who provide feedback the more likely some form of fix will become available.

Unfortunately Apple doesn't officially take notice of the Discussion forums.
