Can't use google.

Ok, so this is probably really stupid.
for the last 2 months or so I haven't been able to use the google search engine, or anything that connects to google, google images, analytics etc.

so I heaps of web pages I try to look at just don't load.

I use firefox version 2.0.0.9, but I cant get it to work in any other internet browsers either like safari or internet explorer.

anyone have any ideas?

You can use harddrive > applications > utilities > network utility to diagnose the situation.

You can ping apple.com. Result:
Ping has started ...

PING apple.com (17.254.3.183): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=0 ttl=236 time=303.341 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=1 ttl=235 time=286.373 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=2 ttl=236 time=270.618 ms

If that does work, try pinging 17.254.3.183 Result:
Ping has started ...

PING 17.254.3.183 (17.254.3.183): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=0 ttl=236 time=258.736 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=1 ttl=236 time=332.151 ms
64 bytes from 17.254.3.183: icmp_seq=2 ttl=236 time=259.360 ms

Info for ping google.com address 64.233.187.99

If pinging 17.254.3.183 works but pinging apple.com doesn't. You have a bad DNS Server address.

In this case, you need to enter you dns address. For some reason Mac OS X sometimes doesn't set the dns. You can set it manually.

apple > system preferences > network

tcp/ip tab and enter address of dns servers

example 162.33.160.100

You will need to use a different number.

ok, i opened activity monitor, and the sad thing is that once i opened it the thing using the most of my cpu was activity monitor. it was using between 11.4% and 5.2% and everything else was using hardly anything, there is a huge long list of programs using nothing. then it says firefox is using 2.4%, msn is using .7%, and then a few random things i dont no called universal access ap and system ui server.
so, i have absolutly no idea why its so slow, because it is hardly using anything.

yeh, i was already thinking i would have to start again when i first came on here, i was just hoping there was a better solution. I think ill upgrade to leopard at the same time.
oh i dont need to worry about backing up programs, im only 16 and the only thing on my computer that is worth keeping is my itunes music because im too lazy to put it on again.
umm, sorry to ask even more questions, how do you reformat a harddrive on a mac? ive never done it.

Can't use google.
