So far, the only way I've found to remedy this is to convert to AAC.

So far, the files that I have found with this problem are all encoded with "LAME". I think this is the culprit. The rest of my files are encoded with iTunes/Quicktime or an "unknown" encoder. To change the encoder, you have to convert to AAC.

To check what the file is encoded with, click "Get Info" and on the "Summary" tab it lists "encoded with:" as part of the file's information.

Hope this helps, though I hope more that there is another simpler solution somewhere.

I found a faster way to correct the problem. The encoder changes with the ID3 tags. Simply nullify the ID3 tags. Right click the song, select "Convert ID3 tags..." and check the box for the "ID3 Tag Version:" which should automatically have "none" selected.

The encoder displayed in the "Summary" tab of the song's information box will change to unknown, and future edits will be properly saved and editable in ID3 tag form.

This should rectify the problem. I don't think it will have any consequences, because I have done this before to make the files compatible for Windows Media Player.

I've just now found a problem with this. It's changed my files somehow where they are no longer recognized in the proper song order with the other tracks in the album. On a 20+ track album, I had three songs posing the problem. So I did the ID3 conversion....and now they automatically appear at the top of the album, even though they have all of the same information as the other tracks on the CD. Alas.

I'm sorry but itunes ***** now. I'm thinkin of swithing of my library over to another application. When i try to edit my track info, it reverts back to the original title, and it would really be a pain in the butt to have to convert all the songs i want to edit to aac. then my itunes library used to be arranged from 0-9 and then a-z, like 2pac and 50 would be at top and so on. but now it starts just with a-z, without an option of numerical order listing. itunes is losing my usership. can anyone help with the issues im having.

I am having the same problem since I downloard the current version. Whenever I change the info. for a song like the song artist, track number and other info, it never saves it.

example-
Change the song name from wrong name to right name.
Click ok, and it looks fine. About thirty seconds later, the song goes back to the previous information.

what is going on?

The act of converting in iTunes the ID3 tags to anything other than "None" causes the Comments field to be replaced with hex characters, eliminates the total # of tracks field, and replaces the Album Artist field with the name of the folder holding the tracks. Other changes may also occur. Converting the ID3 tag to "None" does restore the Comments field to its original first 40 characters or so (anything after that is lost), and it does not restore the total # of tracks data or the Album Artist field. I have Windows Media Player turned off entirely, and all automatic updates in iTunes disabled, but the problem persists. We have 7 iPods, iPhones and loads of iTunes music, and had planned to do more Apple hardware, but will abandon everything if Apple doesn't fix these problems soon. A properly working music database is essential. How can we get Apple to fix this or post a solution?

I was having this same problem after moving all my music to new computer and installing updated version of itunes. After reading this thread I ensured all the sharing permissions in windows were enabled and unchecked the 'read-only' box on the itunes file properties (and for subfolders). Problem still persisted. But then I discovered in itunes that in the edit, preferences menu with the general tab, there is an option box 'copy files to itunes music folder when adding to library'. By putting a tick in the box solved the problem for me. Realised then that I had been trying to change the info on the files in their original locations (on disc in my case)where clearly wasn't going to work. Offer this suggestion in case it works for someone else.
