I've taken recommendations from other threads. My firewall is set to allow all incoming connections. nothing. iTunes is set to share its library. i don't get it. no solution for this? seems like it happened to everyone.
This happened to very few people. You need to take into account that 50 instances of this can make this forum look very busy, but 50 out of however many hundred thousand units were sold is not a lot at all.
Oddly if i disable the ethernet from my imac and use wireless the ATV stays in long enough to ask for the passcode to sync and then thats it. nothing more
My tiger MAC is fine , on same subnet and has no issues.
The 10.5.1 firewall has been set up to allow Itunes through. What I do notice is port 3659 appears ok , butt initially is not.
Now before winston says I am barking mad this is an all apple issue and should not be an issue. I already had to go and buy a new MFP cause my lexmark NEW X.... isnt going to work.
I moved away from Windows last year to mac after spending a lifetime on CPM./msdos/windows and this is the first issue I have had with apple. I hope this does not go the windows way.
So I think I either have to keep a machine at tiger level or ditch the ATV and get something else.
Well, I've tried everything recommended so far in this forum. Firewall is wide open. attempted to connect from both ends, ATV and iTunes. made sure it's sharing. what else would you recommend? And there seems to be quite a lot of people with this exact problem. Are you telling me it shouldn't be of concern because 50 people have had this problem? I'm guessing many more are having this problem, but they don't know it yet. It was the software upgrade from less than a week ago.

I'm not saying this isn't a genuine issue for some, I just don't believe it's a general issue with 7.5, we get these reports after every upgrade and usually in quite high numbers, but as I said before high numbers usually mean 50 or so which isn't really a lot.
I suspect many of these issues are caused because itunes has not installed properly due to a file being in the wrong place, corrupt, missing or having wrong permissions etc, which has not allowed the installer to overwrite, move, rename or delete etc that file or another one.
I don't necessarily blame the user for this, but then again I'm not so sure you should blame for it either, it can often occur through using poorly written 3rd party applications for example. The point I make or at least try to is that when trying to solve such issues it is often unhelpful not to have an open mind about the cause and hence the cure for such problems.
It frustrating, I have been using Apple TV for a while. Recently I upgraded my iTune to 7.4.x and ATV does not appear in iTune Device List. I googled the issue and found several others same issue. suggestion was to uninstall iTune and try previous verions of iTune, which I did and installed 7.3.x, then it worked for few weeks. I made sure, iTune automatic upgrade is turned off. Two days ago, all of sudden Apple TV dissapeared and I have been trying to un-install and re-install and also tried to upgrade to 7.4 and latest 7.5, no luck.
I can only tell you that I am experiencing a similar problem, although I purchased and installed my Apple TV only after I had already upgraded to Leopard.
I have tried a wired connection across a Ethernet-Over-Power configuration, wireless to a 802.11g router, and now wireless to an 802.11n router. Regardless of the configuration, if I am lucky enough to get the Apple TV to see or connect to my iTunes library, it is fleeting at best as it inevitably disconnects and can no longer see the library after a period of time. A power cycle doesn't even seem to fix it but a settings reset does.
this is from your thread:

well I thought the Apple idea was the stuff looked after itself. I installed I tunes. Well in reality the apple software did. if permissions were an issue surely this would have been an issue/reported on at install time
I have been around the block enough to know when this there is a genuine issue and I think there is one here.
There is no third party here , its all apple and it don't work. I accept my Lexmark printer is not 10.5.1 savy and delat with that (got a brother)
You probably have influence at apple so please use it to help us ATV folks out
In fact when first time I had this issue, I called Apple Tech Support and they only suggested (un-officially) to revert back to previous version of iTune to fix this Apple TV not appearing in iTune Device List and they said, hope this issue will be fixed by Apple soon. Surprising, latest iTune 7.5 has same issue. Any how, it is sporadic irrespective of any version of iTune. I also did reset to factory setting. no luck. I get lost when called Apple Tech Support with poor customer service. I'm completely disappointed with Apple TV and iTune compatibility.
Tired of this issue, exhausted with all options. hope someone from Apple (AppleTV team) reading this thread and able to help us.
i think this is a case where everyone with the problem needs to find the common demoninator.
i had my ATV initially set up with itunes 7.4, i then updated to 7.5 when it was released and i never had any problems at all. ATV is still running flawlessly on itunes 7.5.
is everyone who has the problem running windows itunes ? or are there mac users also ? are the mac users with problems all running leopard? or are there tiger users with the problem also ?
