HP Color Laserjet 2840 Leopard Scanner/Fax Drivers.

Does anyone know if/when HP is going to update the Leopard printer driver for the Color Laserjet 2840? I lost all scanning and faxing functionality when I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.

Please advise.

Thanks!

There is a sure way to make this work. My HP LaserJet 3055 all-in-one now works over the network using AirPort with all functions.

1- Delete all your existing printers and faxes that is related to this printer.
2- Install the latest HP LaserJet 3055 driver for Mac OS X 10.4 (the large 125Meg file).
3- Configure via HP Setup Assistant and enter the IP address of the printer (don't pick the name that is shows automatically).
4- Go to your Mac applications folder then HP LaserJet Software folder.
5- Go to the Director folder and change the HP Director application via "file" then "get info" select "open using Rosetta"
6- Got to the Scan folder and change the HP Scan application via "file" then "get info" select "open using Rosetta"
7- If you want to change the name of the printer to something other then the IP address, go to the Systems Preferences then Print & Fax then select the printer and choose "Options & Supplies" and change the name to whatever you want, then click OK.
8- If you want to change the name of the fax to something other then the IP address, go to the Systems Preferences then Print & Fax then select the fax and choose Open Fax Queue, once in the Fax Queue click in the Info blue bottom and change the fax name to whatever you want, then click OK.

Now open HP Director and it should all work.

That may work for the laserjet 3055 but it does not work with the Laserjet 2840, 3015, 3020 and 3030. The installer application from HP is not able to put all necessary files into the suitable directories. So a few things are not installed. A mac without Intel CPU does not offer the possibility to use Rosetta, because Rosetta is just an emulation of PPC-Code.
The scanning function may work, but not so the fax option. HP does not provide a complete fax driver solution, i.e. a modem script. Instead, they just try to tell the system by using a daemon in background, that there is something like a fax. And the daemon is not installed by a fresh driver install on Leopard or, if ugraded from Tiger to Leopard, the daemon crashes.

Ok, here is my tale of woe. I received my printer in late February. After going round and round with the Mac support at HP they escalated my case to some kind of special forces department. I was put into contact with Adolfo:

adolfo.roa@hp.com

who assured me that they were developing drivers, that the drivers would be ready by March 10, and they had about 30 cases like mine. They asked me to keep my case open with them as it would help them to expedite the process. Ok, I thought, I can take one for the team.

I sent emails to Adolfo on March 12 (unanswered), and then March 14. Finally I received his response (the typos are his):

"Hi, I am Adolfo the second level agent for the mac team, I want to let you knoe that we still waiting for those drivers, I understand your frustration but at this point the only solution that I can give you is wait, I know that you are very upset and I understand that but in the same way that you wait I am waiting because I have several calls of CU's that are waiting for this software.

My apologize, Adolfo"

Today is March 21, I have until March 29 to return the printer. I think I am going to start the process of returning it, but not sure if the place I purchased it from will reimburse shipping or if they will have an open-box or restocking fee. I called HP:

1-888-943-8476 option #1 - HP Customer Relations

I spoke with Tesar who immediately tried to get me to email Tech Support and talk to Adolfo. I explained that I no longer wanted support, I wanted cancellation. He basically ignored this and tried again to get me back to Support. I asked to speak to a manager, and he said he was the manager at the highest level. I asked him for his extension number and he said I could talk to anyone in his department about my issue. I asked how many managers there were in his department and he said there were 12 managers just like him. I then asked to speak to the person that was in charge of all of the managers in his department, and to make a gigantic story long, I basically kept getting the runaround.

The worst part of all of this is that I consulted a document on the HP website that said this printer was Leopard ready BEFORE buying this printer. That document is still on the HP website and still makes that claim:

h41140.www4.hp.com/mac connect/pdf/Mac_OS_launchspecial.pdf

My current plan is to return the product and if there are any fees not refunded, I will visit my local small claims court.

This type of false marketing has got big companies like Verizon into a HUGE class action law suit before. I'm wondering if there are enough people that have bought their HP printers based on the information that they've found on HP's web site(s)?

It's still amazing to me that regardless of the advancements in technology how incompetent the huge corporate industries are at A)Customer Service and B)Understanding their customers and how to treat them like "humans." HP obviously has fit the standard corporate mold so well on this one especially in regards to their ability to service their devoted customers on this one.

They've not only lost a fan and customer with their lack of response and ability to follow thru on the word they've given, but I'm definately going to pass on the horrible reputation via word of mouth on this matter. At the very LEAST I can warn friends and tech people in my circle of friends, family, and areas of work (internationally) why NOT to EVER buy, rent, or use HP with and for their Macs.

It was not Tesar I spoke with in Customer Relations, it was Cesar.

Ok, I spoke with Adolfo again, this time he left his extension number:

800-474-6836 x5556716

After speaking with them for an endless amount of time where he would periodically pause to instant messenge his boss, they agreed to replace the printer with a Leopard compatible printer. The problem became that they really didn't have a replacement for the 2840. They had a similar model with no fax, or one that didn't read cards for photos, or that would scan single documents but not multiple... you get the idea.

During the conversation I made the mistake of mentioning that I had purchased the printer from Amazon, and the manager pasted the Amazon return policy for Adolfo to read to me. They basically made it Amazon's problem saying that Amazon allowed the return for compatibility reasons. They totally ignored the fact that they claimed (and still claim on their website) that the printer is Leopard compatible. I was really disappointed that their attitude quickly shifted from "how can we help our customer" to "let's divert the problem to someone else."

I said that maybe the solution was to replace this equipment with the printer and a separate fax machine. The manager then told Adolfo that there really was no need for them to replace the equipment with something that would work for me when I could easily return it to Amazon.

I actually haven't typed up the worst part of my HP experience. If I get some extra time, I will come back and transcribe what happened. I keep fairly detailed notes when I am dealing with customer support issues.

I can add my name to the list of dissatisfied customers of both Apple and HP. I own 3 2840's that worked fine with 10.4 but now my goose is cooked with 10.5. I spoke with Technical Support from HP who told me only that there are no drivers and thus scanning cannot be done. In retrospect, it was stupid to bother "upgrading" to 10.5 when I have seen no functional benefits, but have lost functionality.

It is important to know that while you may not feel that Leopard was worth the upgrade, the issues we are experiencing with HP are in no way, shape, or form related to Apple.

HP's profound lack of customer support is solely their own problem. My Epson, Brother, and Canon printers work as intended. The only issues that I have (along with my Parents) is related to HP's printers.

It is obvious that HP does not care about the Mac community. HP's website doesn't even mention Leopard as it pertains to my $1,000 Color Laserjet 2840, which is slightly over a year old. Prior to the release of Leopard, however, they indicated that my Color Laserjet 2840 was "Leopard Ready." In "HP Speak", that meant that only 2 of the printer's 4 features would work with Leopard. A trivial oversight. Since I use HP's product for business, who cares if only half of its functions are useable? Apparently HP. It took HP over 6-months to update drivers when I upgraded from Panther to Tiger, so they are right on schedule. My Brother, Canon, and Epson printers retained all of their functionality on the first day that Leopard was released.

At least I won't have to worry about dealing with such a poor excuse of a company for my next printer purchase, because I can assure you that it will not be an HP.

After 5-months of waiting for a response from HP, this is what I received from HP Tech Support yesterday:

Hello ,John
Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.

John we understand from your e-mail that you are concerning about the new driver for your CLJ 2840 with the new operating system

Jonh unfortunately the driver for that printer model is not ready yet. So we truly apologies for this long wait and hopefully soon will be on the HP's web side. However, you can sign up in the following link to get an alert when the driver will be there

Hi everybody

I found an updated driver on the hp ftp site today (I'm now downloading).
Search under /pub/softlib/software9/COL22358/ly-58934-1/LJMFP28x0OSX10.5Update-v8.2.dmg.

I hope this are the drivers we're waiting for.

Just to let people know I installed this file and everything is working now great so I think this is the updated leopard drivers for 2840. Just be aware of it you need to install old 10.4x drivers first then upgrade to 10.5x using that file and everything works great.

Thanks for the great find.

seems acrobat 8 isn't perfect yet. When I try to create a .pdf from within acrobat and choose the scanner. HP Director pops up, click on scan, and then it finishes the scan but when you click finish it doesn't do anything. Click close and it discards the scan.

At least the director will scan - and then I'm able to choose save as .pdf -- not perfect but better than yesterday.
