Is it really working like this: I create a new user account and then move the preferences folder to to new one's library folder. I have tried everything but the error won't go away. It appears every time I start the computer for the first time and when I log out, it works normally. The log seems to be always the same:
Exception Type: EXC
BADACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN
PROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
This is so annoying. And yes, Disk Utility doesn't fix this. I really hope that Apple will pay attention to this in their future updates.
I managed to fix it on mine, but arguably on mine, it's a different error. Anyway, on mine, it was caused by the fact that there were two copies of a certain driver: one in the Users/MyUser/Library/PreferencePanes folder, and one in the Library/PreferencePanes folder. Ugh!
I hate the fact that there are no less than THREE Library folders in use at any given time. Oh, how I long for the simplicity of MacOS 8.5, the best version ever, in which there was ONE System Folder, everything had a plain English name, you could view all your system items in the convenient and easy Extensions Manager, etc. I do not know what the purpose of the Users folder is... *I'm the only person who ever comes near or touches my computer.* How many people do you know that even let their own sister, brother, or wife touch their Mac, let alone have lots of random people sit down at the thing? And if your wife
does sit down at it, do you really think she's going to be OK with hidden files? Furthermore, if someone really wants to hack you locally, all they have to do is insert an OS X DVD and change your password, then log in as you. Get rid of permissions and multiple user crap, Apple! Leave it for OS X Server version!!
Anyway, sigh. Check to see if you have any preference panes that are the same between the various different Library/Preferences folders on your Mac. Check to see if there are any drivers that are the same between your various Extensions folders or whatever. I'll bet you'll find the culprit. (another big gripe of mine, what was wrong with calling them Control Panels anyway? why did we have to go and make a folder called PreferencePanes that forces me to arrow down twice anytime I want to type Pref while I'm in the Library folder view in the Finder to select the Preferences folder?? Ugh!).
