"No Bootable Device -- Insert boot disk and press any key" error

When booting Windows Vista Ultimate using Boot Camp, I get a black screen with the message "No Bootable Device -- Insert boot disk and press any key". Also, my keyboard does not respond and the disk does not eject unless I hold the mouse buttons down when rebooting. Can anyone help me and how I can restore my computer back to the original configuration (or the new OS X 10.5 Leopard) so it will work properly? Thanks in advance for any help. This is a very serious problem and is preventing me from accessing my OS X.

I have just had this problem after installing a Leopard update. I do not use BootCamp, tried my Leopard upgrade disk but my machine cannot read the DVD. Went to this forum on my Vista laptop, good job I have one, and tried pressing Option on restart. There was only one disk shown so I selected it and was able to start successfully. Did the upgrade damage the start up file?

If anyone is having problems installing Windows on the Boot camp partition like i had... ( received the black screen with " no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key) here is what i did to fix the issue:

created the partition and ran the bootcamp installation for windows process

bootcamp went through the steps and eventually spit out the disk and the black screen came up...

at this point i restarted my mac by holding the power button and then held the option(alt) key down until my boot options came up...

i then inserted the Windows installation disk and selected it to start up

presto... installation begins

Installing : Windows Xp Home SP3

Solution:

When choosing how you want to format your partition, DON't choose (Leave it as it is or whatever)!!!

Formart it using FAT32 OR NTFS, windows runs better on NTFS.
If you worry about not being able to transfer files from your files from MAC OS X to Windows XP, get (NTFS Paragon) because Apple is too fcuking cheap to correct permission for you(well obvious Apple doesn't like Windows). Plus, you windows partition can be bigger, not limited to 32GB.

For those of you who are already running your Windows on your Mac, DON'T worry, I can give you the solution here:

How to convert a FAT volume or a FAT32 volume to NTFS
Note Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion is minimal, we recommend that you perform a backup of the data on the volume that you want to convert before you start the conversion.

To convert an existing FAT or FAT32 volume to NTFS, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
At the command prompt, type the following, where drive letter is the drive that you want to convert:
convert drive letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, type the following command to convert drive E to NTFS:
convert e: /fs:ntfs
Note If the operating system is on the drive that you are converting, you will be prompted to schedule the task when you restart the computer because the conversion cannot be completed while the operating system is running. When you are prompted, click YES.
When you receive the following message at the command prompt, type the volume label of the drive that you are converting, and then press ENTER:
The type of the file system is FAT.
Enter the current volume label for drive drive letter
When the conversion to NTFS is complete, you receive the following message at the command prompt:
Conversion complete
Quit the command prompt.
