iDVD crashes when using 7.0 themes

I am using iDVD for a school project. I was using the theme "Revolution", put all my videos and slideshows. I used preview to check it and the main menu came up. I clicked for one of my submenus and the transition started. My computer showed the beach ball and then froze. Everything, from the dock to the program itself. I had to hold the power button to restart.

I opened iDVD again and tried going to the submenu first then using preview. I now had the submenu in preview, I clicked a button to go back to the main menu and same problem.

Next I tried to burn a DVD to avoid preview and while rendering the menus it froze again.

I decided to switch to a 6.0 theme and everything worked fine, even burning a DVD. When I decided to use a different 7.0 theme the same problem occured. I believe my 7.0 themes are corrupted and iDVD does not recognize they are.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? The 7.0 themes are much nicer for the project I am doing. Can I download the 7.0 themes from somewhere?

P.S. I tried reinstalling iLife and iDVD several times as well as updating and no progress.

DVD 08 freezes MacBook Pro

Drag and drop this item to the trash and Restart the computer.

com.apple.iDvd.plist

Secondly, Repair Permissions from apple's disc utility.

Thirdly, read this and follow the instructions if the app should quit/freeze when initially launched:

 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306290

symptom
iDVD '08 may unexpectedly quit when opened for the first time, after installation.
Affected products:
iDVD '08
Solution
Close iDVD and update to iDVD '08 (7.0.1). If the issue persists, follow the steps below and keep your iLife '08 installation disc nearby.
Erase the following folders from your hard drive:
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 1
/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 2
0. /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 3

0. Erase the following folder from your home directory:
. ~/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes
. ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.idvd
0. Note: The tilde (~) represents your home directory.

Reloaded I dvd update 7.0

After completing all the above steps the system still freezes

All the test below have the same Imovie the only change is the themes.

Next Test:
1-created a new project with old themes and same Imovie and it burned with no difficulties.

CONCLUSION: IT IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE WITH THE DRIVE

Test 2- Themes 05 using the same imovie burned fine(only had 1 rendering menu)

Test 3- Theme 05 using same I movie failed when there is more than 1 of 1 rendering menu (example 1 of 2 the renderning fails on 2)
Test 4- Theme 05 with same imovie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)
Test 5- Theme 06 with same imovie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Test 6-Theme 06 with same I movie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Test 7 –Theme 06 with same I movie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Test 8-Theme 07 with same I movie (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Test 9-Theme 07 with same I move (only worked if 1 of 1 rendering menu and failed if rendering menu consisted of 1 of 2 rendering menu)

Idvd can not handle more than 1 rendering menu
I have tested this with a total of 9 dvds and the only change are the themes.(used the same I movie in each test)

i have done all of the steps described in the article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306290

still having the same problem. I believe that having more than 1 rendering menu may cause the problem, but I am using a 7.0 theme with its submenus and the problem persist. Yet, when I use a older theme, no problem, even with submenus.

Are the submenus considered rendered menus even if they are part of a theme's package, or does the problem happen when combining two themes' menus?

I couldn't be more frustrated with iDVD.

I am also having the exact same issue. I can work on the project fine until I press the PLAY button and start previewing it. Then my entire system locks up. Dock, expose, NOTHING works. I can still get keyboard lights to work (Caps and Numlock) but nothing else.

Then if I try and burn a disc it gets about 5 minutes into rendering and the system locks up. There's nothing I've tried that seems to help. I've tried other themes and re-installed the app. I've trashed files and ran disk warrior as well as fixed permissions.

I'm not a novice Mac user so this is just super frustrating. Trying to make Christmas gifts for family in another state.

Please, anyone have any fixes?? APPLE??

If you've made all the recent Leopard and iLife '08 updates and are still having problems, hopefully your AppleCare protection is still in place so you can call Apple for help.

APPLE??

Sorry, no one from Apple here - just users helping other users. The problems with Macbooks/Leopard/iLife '08 have been difficult for us to help solve because none of us here with a lot of iDVD experience have such equipment, so we don't have the problem.

I agree with Rob, this is very frustrating. I have a MBP with 2GB of RAM, all the latest updates on Leopard and I can't successfully use the 7.0 themes. They look great, but they don't work (insert politically incorrect joke about supermodels or something here - with apologies to all you supermodels reading this forum). Either previewing the DVD locks my computer up completely or the burning does after a couple of hours. I've forcefully rebooted my computer about five times today.

I have switched back to a version 6 theme, and preview now seems to work successfully - that is, without locking up my entire laptop! What is going on there? A complete lockup suggests some dodgy code at a pretty low level - maybe that's why the fix is proving slow to appear.

None of the other suggestions such as getting rid of my plist file, deleting old themes, repair permissions, etc. had any effect. Yes, I lodged feedback with Apple - but I don't know that I have time to also ring AppleCare because I've already wasted a lot of time on this.

Now I'm burning a disk, and hopefully after 8 hours I will find I have successfully created my DVD using a version 6.0 theme - which I thought were pretty schmick when they first came out, so that's OK. It's always the case that these bugs crop up when you have thirty people waiting on your DVD!

I hope other people can have some success with burning DVDs using older themes - it's certainly better than nothing.

I just tried with a 6.0 theme, Water color. Recreated most stuff that I did in 7.0 Revolution, and it still halted in the same way. I believe that problem is not with the themes, but with the content. If you add several movies and photos into the drop zones, iDVD will hang while rendering menus.

Looks like a deep fu*kup with either iDVD or graphic drivers. I suspect the first.

Dec 11, 2007 12:12 AM in response to jrod07

Actually, it doesn't always work with 6.0 themes. Works only with simple ones, but if you use an advanced 6.0 theme like Watercolor with many background drop zones for photo/audio/movies, it will hang during menu rendering (that part of DVD burning process) just as with 7.0 themes.

When that happens, system.log is filled with entries like this, every 10s.

Dec 11 00:12:03 AV-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel timeout!
Dec 11 00:12:03 AV-MBP kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x3 = Fifo: Unknown Method Error

Apple Hardware Test (extended) shows "No trouble found". This is a graphic driver/iDVD issue.

You options are to wait on Apple's mercy for the fix or create only dumbed-down simple DVDs. **** frustrating. :((

I made a great dvd, using 6.0 theme, Reflections Black. The dvd consists of 8 submenus (places i travelled) and under each submenu was a slideshow (with music) and another submenu for movies. there are no movies placed in the drop in boxes, only still pictures. Believe it or not, i burned the first one successfully, after about 4 hrs of encoding... but then i realized that the finished dvd's text ran off the tv screen, because i had created the dvd under widescreen format. So I fix that, then realize I need to save to image (so i don't have to go through the hellacious encoding process again) but the entire mbp freezes while rendering the menu assets! i try to save as project archive and this freezes mbp (also while attempting to render menu assets)! then i go back and try to just burn directly to dvd and this freezes!!! aaarggh... anyone have any ideas??? please help!!! ps. i just bought this mbp and have over 100 gigs space on internal drive...
