Bluetooth headset and 10.5.1 (Leopard)

After a year of using a bluetooth headset with Tiger and Macbook Pro I tried it today with Leopard for the first time. Soon I had to disconnect the headset because it appears to bring some programmes and the whole system into an instable state.

1) Mail crashed leading to the crash of the whole system when I was sending a mail message. It was a very simple mail - plain text, no attachment, about 10 KB, but Mail.app stopped responding while showing the spinning symbol at the outgoing mail box. A busy cursor didn't disapear. As I tried to quit and even to force quit Mail.app, the whole Finder stopped responding. Then the Dock, then the whole OS... I couldn't even restart the system with keyboard. Finally I turned the computer off.

2) After a new login with my headset turned on and connected (The bluetooth symbol on the menu bar was showing the connected state.) I saw that everything in the system that deals with network or bluetooth responds slowly, i.e. freezes for about 10 - 30 seconds each time when I click on it with the mouse: If I click for example on the bluetooth symbol on the menu bar, it takes about half a minute for the drop-down menu to appear. When I connected to the my server over AFP, the Finder didn't close the progress dialog very long after the remote directory was already visible in the file system. When I opened the System Preferences, the busy cursor appeared and I had to wait about half a minute before I could select the symbols with the mouse. Even Safari froze for a moment at start-up.

Now I've turned off the headset, and everything appears to be normal again.

I upgraded Tiger to Leopard on Nov. 13. and wasn't using the headset after that. Then I installed a system update 10.5.1. after it was released. I don't know for sure if the problems that I experience now deal with Leopard as such or with the recent system update. I'm curious if anybody already observed the issues discribed above and if Apple already knows about it.

Thanks for the download link Mate! I downloaded & installed the Skype Beta a couple of hours ago, and so far this has corrected the problem. I have made several test calls, and the headset has stayed connected. You do not have to use the "use headset" in the menu bar unless you want all of your Mac sound to go thru your headset. All I needed to do was set the audio pref. in Skype pref. to my headset. THANK YOU Conal Ho!! Your welcome at my fire any time Mate!

hi all, this thread was very helpful! One question though...all you guys have macbook pro or other mac none seem to have tried on macbook (the 13" version). I just got it last week and planning to buy the plantronics voyager 510 this week for using with skype or yahoo or ichat....both for calls and voice chat!
Can someone please confirm if it can get it working on the new mac?

thanks all...
Neil

Hi folks - I had the same issue with the Plantronics Voyager 510 including dropout and audio failures. Ended up having to delete and add the headset each time I wanted to use it. I had noted the Skype issue but hadn't thought it related.

Have now upgraded to the Skype beta 2.7 suggested above and so far so good. Also tried deleting the other devices as suggested so should also help. 510 is a good headset from my limited experience, just needed bluetooth help with Mac OS 10.5.1. I've just come across from Windows after many years so have been a bit annoyed by these idiosyncrancies as well as not being able to connect my webcam after spending a ridiculous amount of money on a MacPro. Otherwise pretty happy with the way its gone.

Same problems here, with the headset disconnecting after a bit, and not showing up in the sound panel. I tried removing and adding all the BlueTooth devices, Plantronics 510 first, then Logitech Travel mouse, and finally the Apple (new-style) Keyboard. I could then choose the "PLT 510" as an input device, but still problems disconnecting, and some slowdown problems of the mouse cursor. The headset worked fine in Tiger... I never used it in 10.5.0 to know if the problem was there as well.

I was experiencing distortion when using a bluetooth Plantronics 855. The distortion ONLY happened with Skype, any other audio via bluetooth on the mac or mobile was clear.

I deleted all bluetooth devices, then re-paired the headset, and then also downloaded the skype beta from the link above. Distortion is now much much less, almost non-existent. So my guess is that it's a Skype thing.

I've tried all the solutions posted here so far and no luck. I'm running the latest Skype beta 2.7.0.195 on 10.5.1. Symptoms are bluetooth headset intermittent and bluetooth mouse jumpy when using headset. Everything works great if I remove all bluetooth devices from configuration and add them back. Problem comes back after disconnecting headset and reconnecting sometime later. My situation requires that the bluetooth keyboard and mouse be connected, so having only the headset configured is not an option. Can't say I know where the problem is, Skype or Leopard, but it's still an issue. For now I have to use a USB headset with Skype. Very frustrating.

Well I got the new update and still the same problem. My problem is this: Using a bluetooth headset/phones(its a stereo headset) brings my laptop to a halt and it eventually crashes with the gray screen. If I use it simply to listen to music it is OK. It degrades performance a bit but nothing major. If I open iChat and select the headset as my input/output the computer slows to a halt and crashes. I get audio in the earpieces for a minute but it sounds horrible and the microphone doesn't work so people can't hear me. My headset is a Jabra BT8010. I hope these issues are fixed soon.
