Unlocked German iPhone not working

So I had the pleasure to give Apple and T-mobile 999 euros for an iPhone. After 30 hours it activates in iTunes but there the glory end.

* I can't call the phone (the hourglass just runs and then the phone jumps out to screensaver)
* I can't open the SMS app after receiving SMS
* I can't open last-calls list
* I can't dial phone numbers in the dial-app.

Are there anybody else who has this problems?

I use an unlocked German iPhone with Swedish carrier SIMs (Telenor and Telia).

Regards
Patrik

Hey guys! Good news!

I just called apple. I told them my serial and imei, and guess what! they asked me, if my name is christian boehm (you can read his posts in this thread too). Funny, isn't it?

This problem is caused, , because we all have unlocked phones, which don't need an activation. And: the Iphone can't read other simcards properly. So normaly there is a number, generated of the imei, serial, and phone number. But for we don't have to activate it, no number is generated, and we all have the same number.

But I told you, I have good news: I talked to second leve tech support, and they are pretty aware of these problems we all have with "not-german" simcards.
AND: THEY ARE WORKING ON IT!!!!! I will be contacted in a few days, then they will tell me, when update 1.1.3. will be released. And with this release all our problems belong to the past, so apple says.

DON'T GIVE UP YOUR IPHONE / IHOPE !

btw: christian, if you read this, contact me elehat@mac.com ! 😉

Hello to everybody. i feel the same way very frustrated..but..

i called the T-Punkt store in Kiel where i bought the 2 iphone. the manager of the store raise a case to Apple..

You should try to call and push the store manager where you bought the iphone to raise a case to apple regarding this matter.remind them to not sell it to non german citizen as they will have problem if they do so..

You can also call this 0049 1805009433 apple support., (if possible talk to manager of the support team)
when you talk to them, you should ask them to open a case regarding this matter..
everybody should call this number, if they have many case of this in their database they should do something.
Open up your issue, i hope that we are not letting this problem just for us. they should know the issue..

I found out that the phone is unlocked, but lock to german operator only.. Any other sim can not be use ONLY GERMAN SIM CARD. which they did not inform us. They are calling it unlocked, but it is not actually fully unlocked. i was thinking that if a german citizen will go to abroad like asia and want to use a sim card there to save money. german citizen can not actually do that.Apple Support agreed me with this..

Its not fully unlocked, because if its ,it should take our sim card with no problem.. its a matter of sotware or firmware issue.BUG. Apple support thinks its a bug, but even them ,they dont know when will the next firmware update will be posted.. or if the firmware update will help it. they dont want to get my iPhone because they can not fix the phone. They can only try to contact anybody in apple that can help.

SO CALL now.. ask them to open a problem CASE for you, you should able to hav a case number so everytime you call them you can give the reference CASE Number,, you should push them to have you name, email and telephone number to be contacted..

i dont think that they believe me that the PHONE FUNCTION dont work and that my TELENOR OPERATOR is somehow blocked, because iphone can only be use with German Operator..

This matter should be on the TV news so other people be warned that its not fully unlocked.

Apple Support inform me that the problem might be with my Telenor Operator, but Telenor Operator told me that there are many illegaly unlocked phone in Norway that are able to use the Telenor Sim card..So, they really dont have idea, whats really going on huh, My philippines roaming sim card does not work neither. if its unlocked i should be able to open the SMS inbox to read it sms or even use the Keypad numbers to type a number but no can be,..

CALL THEM AS MANY TIMES YOU WANT..push them.. this is breach of confidence. they should have the responsibility for selling this iPhone to us through T-Mobile. As T-mobile thinks that it can be use abroad because its OPEN LINE..

They asked me if my name is mr. Malesch. But my phone is correctly registert on the apple website!
know's everyone mr. Malesch? everytime when i called apple and correct the wrong registration they told me the wrong name. and this by the last 7-10calls this and last week.

I think they have bigger problems!

I already posted my opinion a while ago but again: It's a bug and not block. Here for the second time the reasons.

In addition to the errors:
1. I can call people from the contact list.
2. I can call people from the favorites list.
3. I can get SMS messages (only reading is not possible).
4. I can internet surfing via the GPRS network.

Apple is a decent company. The suggestion that Apple might have made the phone unusable, outside the 4 current countries to be used, seems to me illogical. For three reasons:
1. A few call functions still work.
2. You can see that each 'crash' is registered in the log files.
3. Apple had ensured a normal message on the screen. This strange quick jump to the home menu is not very Apple.

In addition, it would be illegal. And once again, Apple is a decent company. Again two reasons:
1. T-mobile had to say this during the sale. In my case it was clear that I was a foreigner and that I wanted to use the iPhone in the Netherlands.
2. Such a blockade is not in accordance with European consumer law.

And at last but not at least: I already received a official Apple Bug ID# for the problem.

So please stop the discussion about if it’s a bug or a block. And stop posting about the stupid solution of jailbraking the iPhone. In any event it isn’t a solution, it’s a work around.

But you forget one major thing, APPLE only released the iPhone in these countries and therefore has ensured it operates in these. It will function correctly with a sim card from any of these also. One of the reasons that Apple has not released it in other countries yet, is that they are testing it and ironing out the bugs. Remember the iPhone is NOT marketed in any country other than these. Are you sure T-Mobile does not take our phones back? If you tell them, that you did specifically ask if it would work with your foreign SIM-card and they confirmed (which they absolutely did in my case) they should and would take it back WITHIN 14 DAYS OF PURCHASE. That's what T-mobile told me on on the phone as I explained my situation.

So my last change is to bring it back tomorrow. I really hate the idea of giving it away 😟. I will probably try jailbrake tonight.

OT but could somebody contact me about how to do it as we seem to have the 1.1.2 pre-installed and the websites I found about hacks mention that it wont work with these new phones ?!

As I had indicated in earlier posts, as Apple was not marketing the iPhone in other countries, it was not obliged to include support for it operate outside these.

As for unlocking/jail breaking I don't have any knowledge, but would a simple restore not return it to original state! Also you are not unlocking the phone with the jail break, only allowing software to be installed to the OS of the iPhone. Shouldn't be a major issue I think

There is many forums out there describe how to hack mackintosh (just google), but I don't think I'd advise this route. Might be better to wait for the official release.

Its a shame that APPLE have got so like Microsoft in this matter, i.e. Announce, tease and prolong the delivery date as long as possible! I remember a time when apple would announce a new product and tell you that you could buy it NOW! How they announced Leopard, Apple TV and the iPhone, and in each case prolonged the delivery............

MACWORLD'08 is coming, so I guess we can expect:
Movie sales and maybe rentals from itunes (assume you have an iTunes American account)
G3 (possibly 3.5) iPhone for the Summer
Ultra portable laptops

as a start... It will interesting to see will Steve Jobs (and I think he is a visionary) announce "Apple Inc., are bringing you X, Y and Z..... Yes thats right wonderful products...... but not just yet! I certainly hope Steve is not becoming Bill Gates!
