Unlocked German iPhone not working

So I had the pleasure to give Apple and T-mobile 999 euros for an iPhone. After 30 hours it activates in iTunes but there the glory end.

* I can't call the phone (the hourglass just runs and then the phone jumps out to screensaver)
* I can't open the SMS app after receiving SMS
* I can't open last-calls list
* I can't dial phone numbers in the dial-app.

Are there anybody else who has this problems?

I use an unlocked German iPhone with Swedish carrier SIMs (Telenor and Telia).

I can't answer that. All I know is that it wasn't sold in those other countries, nor was it advertised to work in other countries. The consumer base made the assumption that it would work and they were wrong.

It is a mobile phone, for crying out at a considerable volume. It is not like they bought a new washing machine for their basement. It is mobile. It is supposed to be carried around, and it is supposed to work when it is carried around.

To say that it has to be advertised that it can work in other countries is like saying that one cannot expect it to work on Thursdays, as the specification does not say that it shall work on Thursdays.

Gaz you're wrong. I do get it. I understand your frustration. My point was that your analogy was inherently flawed. While it may seem on the surface that the issues are similar they are not. EU countries are independent countries with different governments and no overriding laws. US states are smaller parts of the same country.

I have sympathy for you, I truly do. However I am not in a position to change anything. You can call me ignorant until you are blue in the face but all I am doing is stating the FACTS determined by a corporation which I do not work for nor own any part of.

Apple has made their choice. You can insulte me all you like but it changes nothing. Don't shoot the messenger.

Apple have provided support in the FW for the countries where the phone is official and a few others (Canada, Italy, Japan and China)

Sim Cards from any of these work without issue in an unlocked european iphone. Sim cards from others don't because they are not supported at the moment. The FW up date (I predict 15th Jan 08 a few mins ago) may fix the problem.

In this case the American is 100% correct. Apple are not obliged to provide support in a country that a product is not marketed in the EU. They are obliged to provide support in countries where it is marketed.
Look at Article 28 EU

But the EU DOES have overriding laws! On many occasions things are referred to the EU for a decision! Laws passed by the EU are implemented across the board! (well nearly all 🙂 )

The "nearly all" makes all the difference. The must be ratified by the countries in the EU. Each country has the choice not to accept the law regardless of the fact that the overwhelming majority do.

The US states do not have the liberty to pick and choose. Any law passed by the US government must be adhearded to by the states with out their consent.
