Unlocked German iPhone not working

So I had the pleasure to give Apple and T-mobile 999 euros for an iPhone. After 30 hours it activates in iTunes but there the glory end.

* I can't call the phone (the hourglass just runs and then the phone jumps out to screensaver)
* I can't open the SMS app after receiving SMS
* I can't open last-calls list
* I can't dial phone numbers in the dial-app.

Are there anybody else who has this problems?

I use an unlocked German iPhone with Swedish carrier SIMs (Telenor and Telia).

Patrik

So in the US all states abide by the same laws? Drinking age? Driving age? etc.

I didn't realise this! From what i had heard??

Allow me to enlighten you on the ways of US law. Certian laws are set by the state govt and certian laws are set by the national govt. Drinking age and driving age are set by the states. The national govt influenced those laws with funding but those laws were still in the states control. Behringer's example of Louisiana shows that.

There are some laws set by the national govt that states to no have the ability to overturn or adjust. Up until a few years ago speed limits were one example. Currently the federal income tax, draft age, voting age, etc are all examples. These laws are set by the national gov't and the states have no power to deny them. It is in this very important area that the EU nations and the US differ.

And, as they say, the difference is all the difference.

cut the political ********! and keep this on topic.

it's btw proven (I saw this last year as part of the theory of the optimal currency zone) US citizens travel more between states than europeans do between EU country's. The interaction between US states is lots higer than EU country's.

BACK on topic, I guess 15 jan will be the date untill I wait before doing some thins we don't discuss...

Don't think Americans understand the concept of the EU! Bit like buying an iPhone In Texas but it being locked in California? Would they be happy then?

Wrong. The EU is NOT like the U.K. or U.S. It is a loose economic union (so far). In fact it is very similar to the U.S. under the Articles of Confederation (1781 - 1788). If it was like the U.S. then the Euro would be mandatory in all member countries, (especially that stubborn U.K. 😉 )

The closest analog in Europe to the U.S. would be Germany. The U.K. seems to be moving in the same direction with Scotland, Wales and Ulster now having local legislatures.

I huess not since it will make its screen greasy...

I asked my cousin (who works for a belgian carrier) the same question about modifying simcards, and he says it's impossible to change information on a simcard unless you have some really advanced equipment which obviously common public doesn't have access to.

What's the point of modifying sim cards anyway, you could use a turbosim or stealthsim.

The point remains the same, European customers paid 750EUR or 999EUR to own a legally unlocked phone which ALL the sales person said would work with ANY other sim card. even foreign ones.

I understand Apple didn't expected so much phones to be exported abroad, but now since that's the fact I think they should increase their support for these duped cutomers who bought a few thousand unlocked phones.

I'm still loyal to my principle of keeping the things legal, but I don't know how long I'll keep waiting with a 750EUR iPod Touch...

P.S. if you operate your iPhone in iPod Touch mode you can perfectly remove the sim card and thus prevent unwilling roaming (that's if an orange sim is inside)

When doing this I stumbled upon a strange issue. Normally even phones with *no sim card* are ALWAYS able to call the EMERGENCY number 112!!!
When I accesed the keypad and started typing digits I got the right SAME crashes of phone app. With no sim card in it! So no country information could have been read out from the sim card...

Oops.... i moved Valentines day..... 🙂

But you MISSED the fact that the UK IS IN THE EU...... doh 🙂

No, I didn't since I pointed out that the U.K. refuses to use the Euro, much to the dismay of the EU bureaucrats. The relationship between the U.K. and the EU is much different than that between Texas and the U.S. If the EU and the US WERE equivalent in authority over their constituent parts, then the EU could have mandated that Apple make the iPhone available in all EU member states and with just one EU-wide cellphone network. IS there an EU-wide network like Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T are US-wide?

I don't care does Apple locked iPhone to some country or not. I PAYED Apple my money for UNLOCKED IPHONE and I want to use it!

You should care, since it is this very policy that is preventing you from using the phone.

People were obviously misinformed by the salespeople. That is a given. However, it doesn't seem like Apple is in any hurry to fix the issue. If it really was a top priority then there would have been a patch out by now.

Love Apple or hate Apple, its getting towards time to accept that the unlocked French phones won't work outside of France.

Hello,
I want to give the feedback on my situation.
I bought an unlocked iphone in france and i got it unlocked in itunes fine. But i'm in Portugal right now and can't use SMS and make/receive calls with a portuguese prepaid SIM card.
Strangly i could make a call one time, but later the "phone" application crashes when i try to open it.

I really hope that an update to 1.1.3 is coming soon and will fix this, because i don't want to hack my iphone since i paid for a legal unlock.
I'll stay tuned to this topic. Thank you all.

I had a LONG call today with Apple France. I have done some structured testing today ( I work for a Mobile Operator so have access to different country SIMs).

Basically, a French officially unlocked phone IS unlocked for all countries. However there is a software configuration issue that causes the SMS and Phone applications to crash when a SIM from non-official countries is used.

Apple France were trying to blame Orange, but from my testing it is obvious that it is a config issue.

This issue has been addressed by third party hacks, and once this unofficial solution is applied to an iphone, it functions perfectly with a SIM.

Apple admitted they knew there was a problem. I sense that they are trying to blame Orange but the reality is that Orange are selling an Apple product and French law allows unlocking.

It is up to Apple to update this "bug". It is a bug, but can be rectified by a configuration change.

I think both Apple and Orange need to admit that people are paying 100 Euros and not receiving a usable unlock. An unlocked phone where the actual phone and SMS function crash and are unusable is not a way to build public trust.

It is sad that third parties underdstand how to deliver a workaround to this serious flaw, yet Apple and Orange cannot agree a sensible public response. Orange made a public statement that their unlock is global, which TECHNICALLY is true, but because of the software bug, make a mockery of the statement,
