Unlocked German iPhone not working

So I had the pleasure to give Apple and T-mobile 999 euros for an iPhone. After 30 hours it activates in iTunes but there the glory end.

* I can't call the phone (the hourglass just runs and then the phone jumps out to screensaver)
* I can't open the SMS app after receiving SMS
* I can't open last-calls list
* I can't dial phone numbers in the dial-app.

Are there anybody else who has this problems?

I use an unlocked German iPhone with Swedish carrier SIMs (Telenor and Telia).

Patrik

faserferl, christian,

I just had a long, and quite frustrating converstaion with t-mobile Germany and it seems the Spiegel article is correct. Even officially unlocked, you need a SIM card of one of the countries where the iPhone is officially sold.
I bought mine yesterday at Saturn as well and I guess I will bring it back (I guess they will probably get all 50 back), as I don't think that Apple will release an update for this and don't want to wait until the iPhone is officially availalbe in Austria sometimes in 2008.
Sorry for the bad news, but I guess the only way to use an iPhone in an "unsupported" county is to get a kacked one (with 1.1.1).

Please let me know, if you get any additionals infos, but that's the way it is, I think.

Gerald

Ok, I've got a response to my mail from T-Mobile:

+Dear Mr Olsson,+

+Sorry but we dount now the settings from other provider for the+
I-Phone.
+Please contact the provider from the SIM card you whant to use or+
+contact the Apple Service.+

+Yours sincerely,+

+T-Mobile Customer Service+

So what does that mean, if I get some settings from my swedish provider I can configure the iPhone to use my SIM-card?

Does anybody now if this is possible? I know that you for example can tell the phone what SMS-servicecenter to use, can you do more?

Regards
Patrik

Faserferl, Gerald,
I called Apple support this morning, and ended up at the third level iphone support.
firstly they were surprised, that the iphone is also sold in Austria, but nevertheless the are aware in the meanwhile, that a lot of people are having the same problems. He told me, that they think, it might be a problem w incorrect IMEI Registrations. They are looking into the problem and working on a fix. I just should sync my phone regulary, and sometimes it should work, not necessarily a new SW Version, but also possible.
The guys at Saturn told me, that you have at least to wait 24hours, until your phone is completly unlocked (...now it's just a little bit unlocked? ...yes, you have to wait!)

thats my knowledge of today.
Best regards
Christian

Christian,
interesting findings!
Did you ask the guys at Saturn if they are willing to take the phone back?
I don't have their AGBs at hand, but I think you can return any purchase within two weeks (have to check).
So it might make sense to wait some more days, if the phone gets a little more unlocked (:-), or if Apple (or someone else) comes up with a solution.

Anyway, many thanks,

Gerald

HI Christian, faserferl, gerald

also bought an unlocked iphone at saturn yesterday and tried to use it with my austrian t-mobil sim card-----same problem as all of you had--no sms functions, no dial pad, etc.
today i called saturn and the guys told me to set the country-settings to germany instead of austria and then sync it again----so i tried that and what a surprise, everything worked perfectly---i could write sms, make phone calls, recieve phone calls and sms----now the bad news:
3 hours later when i came back home same old problem again-nothing of the above mentioned worked!!! and i didn't do anything to the iphone-didn't turn it off, didn't sinc it, nothing!
I guess there's only one possible explanation for that:
apple noticed that i was using an austrian sim card and with the next server update they locked my iphone again!
what do you guys think?
tomorrow i'm trying to call those apple guys, let's see what they tell me...
keep you informed

Any news? I'm having the same issues. Officially unlocked iPhone by T-Mobile (after 30h of wait). I am in Switzerland on SWISSCOM.

- SMS app closes as soon as opened
- Can not dial a number manually
- Can not receive incoming calls
- Can not open last-calls list

I did call several T-Mobile numbers. They say: it's up to Apple. Not sure if they would take iPhone back ("in Germany the creator has 3 tries to fix all issues according to law" which I did not really understood as answer?!). IF YOU WANT TO BRING IT BACK, TRY WITHIN 14 DAYS OF PURCHASE!

The Apple customer service means: Future Software update MIGHT fix these issues known to Apple. This would at least take several weeks... So, if it won't work then it will bee to late to bring it back to T-Mobile anyway...

I also just tried to reset iPhone using a T-Mobile SIM. I could open SMS app and send 1 message, yeahu. Afterwards it turned back to be the same useless thing...

So it might help if we all call Apple (again and again)? Any other successes?

Nov 28, 2007 12:20 AM in response to Ansuz82

Ansuz,

this is NOT non Apple sanctioned unlocking! At least until today T-Mobile has to sell officially unlocked iPhones and I don't think it's too much to ask to be able to use this phone anywhere (any 4th class phone is able to do that)!

Roman, your solution is interesting and the problem you had afterwards is strange. How would Apple know that you changed the settings?

And yes, I think it makes sense to bug Apple support with this problem again and again and I hope that T-Mobile will lose today, otherwise Apple's motivation to do anything in this matter will be rather low.

BTW, in another forum I read that French unlocked phones will be able to work in other countries?!

Regards,

Gerald
