I'm on my 3rd iPod Classic 160GB & was smart; I left the firmware v1.0fc1 on it that it came with out of the box due to the MANY well known issues we've all experienced with 1.0.2.

Anyways, I just noticed 2 threads talking about the available 1.0.3. It must have been released a few hours ago b/c there's only 2 threads on it.

_*MY QUESTIONS:*_

Before I update to 1.0.3, can someone who has already updated to it please answer the following:

1) Has the battery leaking issue been resolved?

2) Will it play in a speaker docking station now without sleeping when controlled via Remote Control?

3) How was Cover Flow improved / enhanced (least of my worries).

4) Is there more features & activity available for the Calendar & Contacts feature or do they still need to be mostly controlled from your computer?
I ask b/c I'm an iPod addict & also have a iPod Touch 16GB & it's latest update (1.1.2) now allows users to create their own events on their calendar whereas before calendar entries could ONLY be created on a computer.

Please reply if you know any answers to my questions & 'share the knowledge'.

Thanks!

Looking forward to a much better iPod Classic experience with the newly available 1.0.3 update.

01 - "Now playing" still shows no cover when i choose not to have one and when there is one cover is still the ugly one.
Why not like the covers on the iTunes Store?

02 - Every time my iPod resets i lose all my Main Menu and Music Menu settings.

03 - I dont like Playlist on Classic. I make custom compilations like singles "B-sides". Everthing tagged and the track numbers right. On my Classic 80G the songs is not in the order i want (like it is on iTunes). Silly "bug" but i want to take control of these things.

04 - Stil the UGLY split screen menu? OH God. Why not make this as AN OPTION to turning it off?

Need to more days to find more things.

@geek: I don't no if I understood your third point correctly, but if you mean that playlists on the iPod are sorted strangely: they are sorted exactly the way you sort them in iTunes. if you create a playlist and click on playcount at the top bar, your playlist will be sorted from most to least playcounts in iTunes AND one the iPod.

don't know for sure if this is what you meant but maybe it helps ^^

I had some trouble updating, but after the third try and a couple hours the install appeared to complete. After the sync, I ejected and used my iPod (all appeared to be fine). However; this morning when I attempted to sync again I received the message "iTunes has detected a iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes."

Since I did a full (painful) restore a couple weeks ago, I guess I'll wait on this. ****, since buying my last two iPods; my desire to own a Mac has diminished significantly.

Things I've noticed with this update:
  • TV episodes in last-to-first order - maybe this is a problem because the show (Rumbling Hearts) has all its episodes tagged as being on the same date, presumably the date it hit the iTunes store
  • Recently Played playlist now picking up iPod plays. iScrobbler should be happy.
  • Event alarms now beep four times instead of once.
  • Music videos are arranged by artist.

You might find reseting the iPod & rebooting the computer helps. If possible disable disk access mode until it is behaving properly.

I experienced the "lossless bug" on a number of tracks I ripped when using 1.0.2 version firmware, and since the upgrade I have not had any problems with this issue.

I rip everything in lossless now, just sounds better, and with 130GB still remaining on this drive space isn't a problem.

I wonder what will happen to the mediocre disk access speed as this thing fills up? Incidentally defragging the drive seemed to help speed things up a bit when I added a lot of video.

The battery drain issue seems to be solved.

As an aside I find some of the EQ settings cause the audio output to clip. I am not using sound check and apparently the files are not normalized to 0dBFS with the eq engaged. (Does sound check normalize?) Not very useful in my book.

Ah, the joys of low bit rate encoding. You've been sold the idea that these 128K AAC files are indistinguishable from CDs - well they aren't. AAC (MP4) depends on perceptual coding based on the idea that some of the detail contained in a recording is inaudible and can be discarded, frequently that isn't quite the case. If you really like a song and care about the sound quality get the CD and rip it using Apple Lossless - it will sound a great deal better. Frankly the iPod won't win a competition for ultimate sound quality, but it is acceptable.
