HP DeskJet 1120C - Not Printing

My HP DeskJet 1120C (11x17 color printer) is long-in-the-tooth but still works great and is a workhorse in my business. Since it is a parallel-port device only, I have it connected to a WinBox.

When I got my first Mac in June '07, I found I could print to the 1120C from the Mac but the colors were not accurate. Now, with the upgrade to Leopard, I cannot print to it at all. I get the following error:

Connection failed: NT STATUS_CONNECTIONREFUSED

I using the following driver: HP DeskJet 1120C - Gutenprint v5.1.3

Queue Name: HP1120C

Host Name: localhost

URL: smb://gateway-desktop:139/HP1120C

Is there anyone out there who successfully uses the 1120C with a Mac? If so, I would appreciate any tips to get mine going. BTW, it works fine as a shared printer among my various XP WinBoxes.

Andrew (Mac HP Architect): Are there plans to upgrade the Mac driver for the 1120C?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

I found a work-a-round solution to my problem posted above.

First, I discovered that Linux offers a Mac OS 10.5 Open Source driver that works with my HP 1120C printer and others. It can be found here:

http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs

However, after installing that driver I still had the same problem, i.e. Connection failed: NT STATUS_CONNECTIONREFUSED. So, I figure it must be some kind of networking problem.

Seth’s 11/28/07 post on the thread link below offered a solution that solved my inability to connect to the printer:

It seems to me there is a flaw in Leopard’s printer setup utility regarding Widows shared printers. You should not have to do it the way Seth described, but it works.

Regarding Leopard’s Gutenprint driver for the HP 1120C, it will print but the colors are still not accurate, particularly in the red range. Using the Linux driver, the colors are definitely more accurate and the font printing is slightly bolder (I have not thoroughly tested it). Before you install the Linux drivers, you will need to install a couple of other plug-ins for the drivers to work. That is explained in the driver package “readme” file.

I am still hoping HP will upgrade the HP 1120C driver included with Leopard. It is definitely flawed – the color output is way off. And the present Mac HP driver (and Linux’s driver) offers only basic printing with no adjustments. It should offer utilities for print quality adjustment, maintenance functions, etc. like the original Windows driver did.
