Apple TV LED blinking amber non-stop, no video, no audio

As described in the header, my Apple TV (120GB) has its LED blinking amber non-stop, no video, no audio. It is about 2 months old and I have never had issue with it before.

The manual says this indicates that it is starting up, but I can tell you, it is not starting up.

Macbook Black 2.0GHz 2GB Ram, Mac OS X (10.5.1), Intel Core Duo

Is the light only blinking amber? White and amber mean bigger problems. See what apple says.

If all you are getting is a bad booting, try running a diagnostic.

Also, if you give it a reboot (unpluging), leave it unplugged for a good 30 seconds to a minute. I bet there could still be power to the logic board, and you need to let the internal led bleed it dry otherwise the internal memory can cause some problems.

I had this problem the other night and here is how I corrected:

1. unplug unit
2. after 1 minute plug back in and hold the menu and ➖ button for 3 seconds.
(unit should reboot and go into recovery mode)
3. In recovery mode, run diagnostics and if passed then perform factory resotre.
4. Problem should be resolved - resync with iTunes and perform 2.0 update.

Good luck...

Took my AppleTV to Apple Store today and they've confirmed dead machine. Gave me a replacement box. Sadly my original machine which ran perfectly well for 11 months couldn't handle the strain of the repeated reboots required by the update. Seems if you get flashing amber light and never get to a white light then only solution is a replacement machine and hopefully you are still under warranty.

Same problem here. All the sudden while I was watching a movie (HD) the thing start skipping and jumping frames and then freeze. After that I just when dead. I was able to factory rest it but I will go crazy again after a few minutes after the 2.0 update.

Im currently Chile, and this thing is under warranty and there are official local apple repair but the geniuses from apple do not give international warranty for this @$%&& so my only choice is to ship it to a friend to the US so he get a new one and ship it back... the cost of the operation the same a this piece of ... Nice customer service.

I have the same issue too except i bought mine in NYC and live in Ireland. There is no apple store here. However there are 3 companies who repair Apple products. 2 of which service Apple TV's. Though i was told because i bought it in another country they can't do anything for me!! What to do? I rang Apple Europe who say the same. They told me to call Apple USA who told me that it was crazy and to bring it to them and not tell them where i got it! Can they see by my serial number where i got it? Although i think the plug on the Tv will be a bit of a give away! Any suggestions or am i still covered in Ireland?

Hi, i think this is a bad news for you...

i live in mexico city, and i buy my AppleTV in Miami, when i take my appletv to a service center in mexcio they told me, that I need to send my apple TV to USA, for this device they dont have worldwide coverage...

I send it with a friend of mine, he made the change in apple store in miami, and they give him a new one....

thats my story....

Similar problem, different story.

- Bought my AppleTV in June 2007
- It's been working fine since when.
- Updated to 2.0 in August 2008
- Stopped working (got the amber blinking light) - no video, no sound, nothing

Apple says it's not on warranty anymore, so there's nothing they'll do about it. When I tell them they're the ones who bricked my AppleTV, they say "there's an agreement you accept which says we're not responsible if we break your hardware". She told me I should not have updated, that it was me who bricked the appletv, not apple and she actually hung up the phone on me when I tried to get more explanations.

So if I get it right, when Apple puts an update in their software update, there's a chance that they'll break their hardware and that's just it?

This is by far the worst apple experience I've had and I've had a dozen of macs since my Mac Plus

i had the same issue suddenly happen to me. i rebooted the appletv, and it never came back - simply an apple logo on screen, and flashing amber light.

reading another thread, it said about the same sort of thing happening with other apple [networked] devices when they couldn't find or use the network. the link is here:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1018461.html

so, with the apple logo on screen, i tried to ssh to it (i am a very naughty boy and have jailbroken the unit, with ssh, afp, usb support and the most marvellous XBMC application to help play the files the standard unit won't. you must do this immediately, or you will waste this really nice product)

i was surprised i could ssh to it at this stage of the [hung] boot process. the last thing i had tried to do was to mount some network drives using afp. doing a quick "ps auxwww" showed that my shell script with the afp commands was still there, after a reboot!! and the 1st afp command too. a "sudo kill" of the processes, and the unit immediately started the startup movie and voila!

hope this may help someone too...

Personally I think it is shocking that Apple does not have an international Warranty.
Most if not all reputable manufacturers have one. I know that they are one of the most greediest manufacturers but honestly, why does it matter where you bought it?
Really its the same product just more expensive outside of the USA (more than tax). I guess they are not happy you paid £50 less for it.

For me this is probably one of my biggest gripes with Apple, I would re try and not mention where you got it, say you are a student in the UK from the states, Apple should fix or replace this despite where you bought it
