burning audio CD vs. mp3

My car stereo is MP3 compatible, so should will burning in MP3 mode allow me to fit more songs on a CD?

Yes. MP3 song files are much smaller for a given amount of music than those used on an audio CD.

The bitrate used for the mp3 varies, but mp3's are typically 10:1 smaller than the original CD file. Since you are contemplating a car audio solution, sound quality isn't the #1 issue, so you probably don't need to worry yourself with using a CD.
