Firewire 400 vs Firewire 800

I believe the new imac has both a FW 400 and FW 800 port. I don't know too much about FW -- can I plug a FW 400 device into either port, or do I have to use a device specific to the port (e.g. 400 with 400, 800 with 800)?

That could come in handy, too bad my Newegg package arriving tomorrow won't have one inside...

With newegg, it's best to buy cheap cables and such as part of a larger order;
if you order 'em alone, the shipping often costs more than the merchandise.

BTW, does anyone know of a source for SHORT cables? It's really
messy to use a 6' cable when 18" would be more than long enough.
