Epson stylus color 740 - job stopped

Same printer as me, so we know it can work!

I had that problem after an update which was cured by re-installing the printer driver.

I didn't bother, just re-installed the driver from the disk that came with the 740.

You do remember where you put that, don't you? 😉

I can also highly recommend you download and install the appropriate Gutenprint driver, which gives you many more options:

Please, exactly where did you get the OS X driver for the Stylus Color 740 on the Epson site? Can you give an URL for the page? I have searched and searched on their site and keep coming up empty! This is exactly the printer and exactly the problem I'm having!

The driver came on the CDROM that came with the printer.

The CD that came with this printer has drivers for Mac OS 7, 8 and 9. Perhaps later they included OS X drivers, but not on this CD.

Maybe I've gone blind from looking at that page so many times. All I see are OS 7, 8 and 9 drivers, and a link about 10.5 that goes in a circle. Do you see an OS X link there that actually links to a driver? If so, could you send the specific link?

Setting up the Epson 740 printer is a little tricky under MacOS X 10.4. There are in fact Epson USB as well as Gimp-print based drivers for the Epson 740 in Tiger (both of which will work).
The easiest way to set up an Epson 740 print driver is to use the Printer Setup Utility to delete any existing printer queues for that printer. You should then be able to unplug and replug in the USB cable for the Epson 740 and a new printer queue will be automatically created. This method of creating the Epson 740 printer queue will always work.

The creation of the Epson 740 printer manually from within the Printer Setup Utility is more problematic. If you create the printer without using the "More Printers..." button to select the printer driver, the resulting printer queue is broken and will stop the print queue anytime you send a print job to it. If you use the "More Printers..." button to select the Epson USB driver for the Epson 740, the resulting printer queue will work fine.

Klaus1 you are a life saver! I was just on the point of buying a new printer to replace my very ancient 740 and have hardly any hair left but the re-creation of a new printer queue in the Printer Setup Utility definitely works a treat. Ta ever so.

I am having exactly the same problem and have been following your discussion. I installed the Gutenprint 5.0.2 that you recommended. My other problem is that I deleted the printer name from the list of printers and am unable to add it again. When I click More Printers in the printer setup utility, Epson USB appears in a drop down menu in a new window. However, the printer name itself never appears, so there is no printer for me to select to add. What can I do? Thanks for the help.
