WiFi Disable = Hard Lockup!!

Hello,
Could anyone else please confirm that disabling WiFi under XP/Boot Camp on a Santa Rosa Macbook Pro causes a hard system lockup?!
I then have to re-boot using "Previously known good configuration" to get back to the desktop.
Its driving me nuts as the Wireless card seems to conflict with the Firewire bus (disrupting Firewire audio), plus also I'd like to be able to extend battery life, be able to run XP/Boot Camp on flights etc.

Thanks for your time guys.

Great Keynote of our leader Steve, hmm?

Anyway, Gr8h8m, I now can confirm that enabling the wifi before shutdown
(thus having windows boot up with wifi enabled) does "fix" the lockups for me.

Anyway, since I am not using wifi at all (security issues), that is kind of a "stupid workaround"
and I won't see that issue as "solved" for me yet!!

Gr8 Keynote Steve 🙂 But please... satisfy us, too, in letting your guys doing some
patchwork for us!!

So far, Cheers,

Thomas

- I can confirm that I too have the following hardware:
MBP SR2.2 (Purchased in early July 2007)
Atheros AR 5008 Driver Version 6.0.3.62
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Driver Version 6.14.11.134
TI 1394 Chipset Driver 5.1.2535.0

Does anyone that is experiencing this problem not have this hardware combination? I know of people with non SR MBP's that have no problem disabling wifi.

- Gr8h8m, Since you mentioned you also use your MBP for audio production, have you checked out www.musicxp.net. It is a really great resource for tuning XP for audio. Also I believe I read on the RME forum that you can improve performance by making the following modifications to the NVIDIA preferences:
Right Click on the NVIDIA icon in the sys tray:
Performance & Quality > Image Settings > High Performance
Performance & Quality > Antialiasing > Off
Performance & Quality > Anisotropic > Off

The above modifications did make a marked improvement on my system.

- Finally, I'd like to request that those that are referring to my "workaround" as stupid and not solving the problem to show a bit more respect and keep these discussions polite. I was very clear to point out that it was not a solution, just a workaround, and for those that use our computers professionally, where crashes and errors are not an option, this slight inconvenience is better than the alternative. I understand that on some systems the act of disabling the wifi causes an immediate crash, so obviously my "workaround" doesn't work, but on my system it does, and hopefully that has temporarily helped someone who has the same problem.

Thanks to all for continuing try and get to the bottom of this.

Vedekito - Gutted for you, but thought it was too good to be true. We're all in this together!

rjaudio - Hey there, I'm sure no-one here has implied that you were stupid in any way for suggesting your workaround (which unfortunately doesnt work for me) - the fact you've contributed a workaround at all is to be applauded. I think what was meant is that having to do this workaround at all is annoying/"stupid", and reflects sloppy software quality control on Apple's part.
Funny that you mention RME - I'm using 2 x FF800s here for 32 out, and up until this MBP have been strictly a PC person for the last 10 years - with never a problem like this - and am well versed and comfortable with the standard XP tweaks necessary for smooth DAW sailing on a PC. Those nVidia tweaks I already performed after installation, but its great to have that info here as a reference.
Has anyone heard any rumours about a Boot Camp update, as I haven't noticed any difference between 1.4 and 2.0?

Yeah, I've been constantly checking/updating drivers for the Realtek, nVidia and Atheros components in a bid to try and sort out this problem. Currently using Realtek 1.84, nVidia 169.28 and Atheros 6.0.4.13. This lock-up behaviour is so strange though and really suggests something more architecturally funky rather than at a driver level. Maybe its a bug in the BIOS emulation?

I'm in agreement with Gr8h8m. I think it's firmware, or (hopefully not) a hardware issue. At one point early on, I completely removed all the Atheros drivers and it still crashed on reboot.

Gra8h8m, I too have a Fireface 800, with the wifi disabled (which I know you can't do) and all the tweaks performed to XP, I have been able to record 24 tracks of 24/44.1kHz for several continuos hours without any lost ASIO buffers (I use Samplitude, which reports these things). I have occasionally had lost ASIO buffers, but most were either inaudible or very tiny ticks that were easily removed. I do know people that have the non SR core2duo and never have any problems with the above config. I guess I shouldn't have waited for the SR to come out.......

hiya Gr8h8m & Co,

I'm sorry to see that you are all still having problems with your Santa Rosa MBks.

I really feel for you lot - I've been through many an hour configuring gremlin-infested machines... I hope you find a fix soon - May the forces be with you!

I've had a few lock ups related to the wi-fi, but usually when they system is under stress & there's a lot going on in the OS (so I've just about forgiven it) - but it's still quite stable. ... still not perfect, but I'm working on it.

Hi all,

I just sent feedback to apple via the www.apple.com/feedback, MacBook Pro page, and also called Apple Care. If you haven't already, could you all do the same, and make sure to insist that it is not a Windows problem. They are very quick to use that excuse, but this is a problem that is specific to this particular build of the MacBook Pro, and doesn't seem to affect other machines.

Thanks

Hey guys,
I purchased my macbookpro a couple weeks ago, and have been running into the same problem as some you guys.
- Turn off wifi = GOOD
- Turn off wifi and reboot = BAD, need to use "previous known state"

However, sometimes when I turn off wifi and reboot, there are a slight chance (maybe once every 10 times) that I can succesfully boot to windows. But, if I reboot again, (without turning wifi on), it will hang, and the "previous known state" won't work anymore because the previous good state was booted with wifi off... The only solution then, is to format and reinstall everything!!

I have re-installed my winxp 10 times over the weekend, trying to find the solution to the problem, but I can't... I tried updating the wifi driver version to the newest 6.0.4.13, but still didn't solve the problem.

Hello, yes I will file a bug report to Apple, hopefully they will be able to solve this problem soon...

Here are the info about my mac:

Wifi card model: Atheros AR5008
Wifi driver: 6.0.4.13 by WildPackets
Firewire: TI
Firewire driver: 5.1.2535.0 by Microsoft
Video Card model: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
Video Card driver: 6.14.11.134 by NVIDIA

I guess these models are the same as yours.
