error code -36

Hello,
I have been using SMB sharing to connect my macbook to my PC for a month or so, and everything was working fine. Until two days ago! I started receiving "error code -36", after Mac was trying to connect for 2-3 minutes. The local security policies in the PC are correct. I followed the instructions from an Apple article which has to do with the "sudo pico", but it did not work.
Any suggestions?

Hello Kostas,

Glad to see that I am not the only one with this issue. I can rarely connect to my pc upstairs using a wireless G broadband router from Linksys. When you were connected to your pc, what were you able to do? Could you print to that printer or did you share 1 printer between the 2 computers?

Hi Doobs,
I know its a relief not being alone in this Pc to MAC switch. When Mac was connected to PC everything could be done. PC, MAC, and a Canon pixma ip 8500 (via a netgear print server psv121) are connected through a router (belkin 54g) without any problem. But now I cannot access the PC files from the Mac and I am very disappointed. Nothing was changed in the above network and I cannot find any hint as to what caused this failure. Printing is still fine from both computers.

I also use the WRT54G Linksys and I cannot connect to the printer that is connected to the pc? The pc runs wirelessly and connects to my router which is downstairs and plugged into my imac. I can only access the PCs shared docs (pictures, music, whatever I place in the shared folder) but no printer. How did you set this up?

I am not an expert on this subject but I can describe my home network to you, if that may be of help.
I have connected the PC via ethernet cable to the router. I have connected the printer to the print server. The print server is connected via cable to the router. The Mac is connected to the router wirelessely via its own Airport.

You've jumped into this topic with one of your own different than the OP's? It would be better if you started your own topic, and probably more productive for you if it was in the Tiger Printing & Faxing forum area in as much as that's what it relates to. I have this same problem with or without Thursby Dave on my g5 running 10.4.11
This is from a fresh install and then doing a combo update to 10.4.11.

hey dude,, i have the same problem, I just bought 2 new elements western digital 320 gig hardisk...
THis is what happened.
I was trying to load movie files in both of my HArd disk. I loaded the first harddisk from a PC successfully, .. Then I bought a new MACbook with leopard.
I tried using the new macbook to copy the files of the first haddisk to the 2nd harddisk.
then I got error code 36.
I was so disappointed. Good thing I didnt trow my old acer PC, that i used to load the 1st HD. I tried to copy all the files from first HD to the 2nd HD and it is successful using the PC.
I think the problem is with MAC.
When I finish copying,, i tried to replicate the problem again in MAC by deleting the file that has caused the error in MAC and recopying again using macbook,, and viola,,same error in mAC,,.error code 36..
actually i'm copying a lot of avi files, then i first encountered the error, i just tried deselecting the file that caused the error, then again , it errors out again for a different file. IN pc, no problems at all.
I'm a new PC to mac user. I though i will shift to mac permanently, but because of this, i now having a second thought.

Trouble is... -36 can mean different things depending what is actually spitting it out.

If it's SMB then it generally means the PC is denying access, which could a few things...

The Plain text passwords thing looks like you addressed it.
One or more of these ports aren't open... 137, 138 and 139. Might disable all firewalling for a test.
The Mac can be trying to connect to a past IP using an Alias. Have you tried it via smb://ip.of.the.pc/folder ?
The Mac may be send a bad/changed Password before you get a chance to enter it. Delete that reference from Keychain Access.
Recent XP updates don't like it if you try to share the whole boot drive/partition, and the net user needs to have an account on the PC now.

One other -36 is an I/O error, could be messed up HD, illegal charachters in a filename or path, trying to transfer files over 4GB, etc, etc.

How do I delete the "bad/changed password" reference from the Keychain Access.
There is only the shared documents folder in the PC.
I am still during the test period so the files I am trying to transfer are small document files (1-2 pages each).
I hope that one of those "tricks" will be successful.

Hello again BDAqua,
I disabled the windows firewall and the connection was established instantly. I then tried to add the recommended ports on the exceptions of the firewall, I received a message informing me that these ports are used by NetBIOS Name Service. So I could not add these ports to the exceptions. I then turned the firewall on and the connection was lost again.
Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my Windows® Firewall & 3rd party Firewalls, the only solution I've found so far is to use Bonjour for Windows, available from apple>downloads, it warns that it's opening ports, but it seems to at least open the right ones.

Not near a PC at the moment, but somewhere, maybe My Networks, on the left you'll see something about enable UPnP. after enabling that, the PC should show up quickly.
