When importing audio cds into the library, I often get a strange error.
When iTunes asks if I want to import the current cd and I confirm, the cd disappears from my devices list and nothing happens.
When I reload the cd, it is imported normally.
Does anyone has the same problem and is there a cause/solution?
Yep, Eric, it's the same problem. Could you please post your drive information for Scott P. & also whether or not you recently upgraded to Leopard & how you ran your upgrade? Thanks!
Neither of our MacBooks, nor the MBP are having the slightest trouble of this kind, Scott. All three are fitted with superdrives . All three are now running Leopard (one of the MB's originally ran Tiger and the MBP had Tiger installed at time of purchase but was immediately updated to Leopard without being used under Tiger. The newer MB had Leopard installed in the factory).
I'm still interested in any possible issues with the actual type of conversion being undertaken on import. Are those experiencing problems using the default import (AAC 128) settings, or have they changed to something else (mp3? Apple Lossless? different bit rates, etc).
Further, do people have any additional iTunes related "add ons" or scripts etc installed? It may simply be that such things, perhaps installed when using an earlier version, are not compatible with more recent versions of iTunes or Quicktime. Such things may, of course, have been unwittingly brought over during a compuetr "migration". This is a not uncommon explanation when some, but not really a lot of people, are running into an issue of this kind.
Oh, SHOOT, that's what I forgot to do with my 2nd CD import this morning, change the import format! Anyway, I'm importing in AAC@256 VBR, & have been for a couple of years.
Just found a couple of other CD's that haven't made it into iTunes, sooo, changed import preferences to mp3@256 no VBR, CD still pulled it's disappearing act. It's importing just fine with the re-insertion. I'll fool with the other CD's tomorrow as once you get past the first disappearing CD, subsequent imports usually go off without a problem.
I decided to try another CD to just check what happened when playing back the CD through iTunes without importing. When the message asking whether or not I wanted to import after the CDDB info was looked up, I said "no", & darn, if the CD still didn't disappear. Think I'm going to disable CDDB lookup & see what happens, will let you know.

The "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B" indicates that you have a "combo" drive, made by LG, rather than a "superdrive" from Matshita, Eric, so, if your problem is the same as that experienced by others in the thread we can probably exclude drive defects / type etc from the equation as the cause.
Looking at all of the posts about this matter it is pretty clear that the problem is NOT specifically hardware related (the range of computers involved is too wide), though it may be an interaction between some types of hardware and the OS.
It is interesting, given this, that it doesn't apply to everyone (none of our family's computers suffer from it -touch wood - though we pretty regularly import audio CD's using two MacBooks, a MacBook Pro and a PPC based iMac G5, all running Leopard)
It is interesting, too, that some people seem to be suggesting that it happens always, while others seem to imply that the problem is intermittent!
All of this points to some sort of "interaction" effect between iTunes imports and some other software on the machines concerned (such as a 3rd party iTunes or optical disc related "add on", though it need not be so closely or obviously related to iTunes or disk use), or , perhaps, a problem with a corrupted or unusual preference or system file, or CBBD or iTunes database file or similar, I would think.
I was thinking it had something to do with the "get artwork" feature. Like that artwork is not available for that album. Does this happen with anyone who isn't connected to the interweb? Can we start logging some specific albums in a separate sticky or something?
I think my theory is out the door. Out of the last 15 I imported it did it with the following:
The Detroit Cobras-Life, Love and Leaving
Ozzy Osbourne-Speak of the Devil
Sufjan Stevens-A Sun Came!
The Cult-Electric
Rachel Sweet-Fool Around
All of those albums are available on iTunes.
Hi, my problem is similar. I've inserted an audio CD and it's disappeared. Nothing has come up on the screen, so I haven't even got to the import question. I've tried every way I can find to eject it, but nothing's worked. Help - how do I get it out?
Eric, would it be possible for you to create a "new user" account on your system? If you can, try to import some of the CD's on the "new user" & see what happens. It will help to narrow down the problem, if we can determine that the issue occurs on a "pristine" iTunes library. I've set up a "new user" on my system & run some test imports, but I'm hoping you might be willing to try.
I'm having this annoying problem also.
At first I could eject cd's. I clicked on the "don't ask me again" for confirm. this made things worse. I can no longer eject cds, either thru itunes or the keyboard eject. the cd does not show up in finder so I cannot eject.
I rebooted and was able to eject cd.
I went to itunes pref panel, advanced, and clicked on import and eject. That worked fine for a few cd's and it is now stuck again frustrating. Guess i'll have to reboot.
Gary, could you please post your drive information, how you ran your Leopard upgrade or was it pre-installed on a new system? Also, do you have any iTunes plug-ins on your system? Thanks!
Gary & Dinah...before you reboot have you tried to force quit iTunes by pressing Control, Option & Escape at the same time? Quit iTunes and wait a few moments then the cd can be ejected usually.
from sys information:
there is a disc in the system that I cannot eject.
I did a force quit on itunes previously (it hung up). that cleared things up for about 3cd's but the problem is back. This time i was able to exit itunes, but still cannot eject the cd. Guess I will have to reboot.
I did an archive and install of Leopard. I have a Konfabulator itunes player installed.
Also just before I stared loading in all these cds I notices that my logon startup had a itunes helper set to startup and run. I deleted this from the login startup. Thats when I noticed these problems. But this is also the first time that I tried to consecutively load in a bunch of cds.
