How to Upload video from Canon HG10 to Final Cut Express

After much frustration I figured out how to get video into FCE from my Canon HG10.

1) connect camera to Mac.
2) turn on camera (you should see "Canon_HDD" in your finder window)
3) Turn the knob used to turn on the camera to "Mode". It won't stay in this position but puts the camera in playback mode
4) In FCE go to the "File" menu and select "Log and Transfer"
5) This will open the "Log and Transfer" window
6) Your video clips should show up in this window. You can play them to see which ones you want to transfer to FCE
7) Drag and drop the clips you want to import into the "clips queued" area which is located below the clip previewing area. FCE will automatically start uploading your clip.

I should mention the settings in my "Easy Setup" window.
1)"Easy Setup" is located under the "Final Cut Express" menu bar
2) Under Format I have "Apple Intermediate Codec" selected
3) "Rate" is set to "All Rates"
4) "Use" is set to "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50"

Don't ask me what these mean. I have not a clue.

Now all I have to do is learn how to use FCE. Easy... Not

Good luck!

Hi,

As I'm very interested in buying a camera like yours I'd like you to tell me something about the quality of the images, if you please. I hear avchd codecs produce very compressed videos so I'm not completely conviced about purchasing one yet.
My purpose is only home movies; I'd use FCE 4 and play the video through an AppleTV on an Sharp LCD.

Thanks in advance,

Fabrizio

I am real new to video and to the HG10. I am a still photographer and business owner. We want to put up some product and training videos on our company website (www.VisualsSpeak.com).

Having said that the image quality seems quite good on the the HG10. I'm not at the point where I have any video on the web yet, so I can't give you any feedback on that aspect.

I use Canon cameras for my photography. I have a 5D and a 20D with various lenses. I think Canon puts out some great equipment. No complaints.

I have the hg 10, and cannot transfer the files into any of the software that came with it: Corel App. Disc, and Image Browser. I was told that it would transfer into Leopard with no problem. I can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Use iMovie v7 (that comes with a new Mac or as part of iLife '08), or if you're using Final cut (Pro or Express) just follow the directions in eh first post in this thread...

People having problems with Final Cut software and the Canon HG-10 video camera can find the answer at Canon's FAQ.
Using the Canon HG10 Camcorder with Final Cut Studio 2

Note:

Only Intel processor Macs can capture and edit AVCHD footage.
Please update your Mac before you start. Click the 'Apple' in the upper right hand corner of the screen, then click 'Software Update' to update both the Mac OS and Final Cut.

The camcorder must be in video playback mode and must be connected to the power supply. Attach the HG10 AVCHD Camcorder to the computer using the supplied USB connector.

The camcorder appears on the desk top as an external hard drive named "CANON_HDD".

Open Final Cut Studio and create a new project.

From the File menu select Log and Transfer.

VERY IMPORTANT!!
In the Log and Transfer window select CANON_HDD.

Toggle down the settings menu and select preferences.

In the Import Preferences window, under source, select AVCHD Plugin > AVCHD. Under Transcode select Apple Intermediate Codec. Click OK

At this point you can log clips the same way that you would if you were capturing them from tape. After entering the logging information, click Add Clip to Queue. FCS will automatically begin to transcoding the clip and it will show up in the project bin.

OR

At this point you can select clips and click Add Selection to Queue,

or simply drag clips into the queue where it says "Drag media here." Either way the media will be automatically transcoded and sent to the project bin.

You are now ready to edit your footage.
