iPod Touch will not connect to WiFi network

feel lucky! Im not even getting as far as you are. I open the wifi settings and i connect to my home linksys network that has full signal, but when i go into my settings, the ip address and all of that jazz isnt there...there is nothing. I tried entering all the info from my routers info sheet, but that didnt work so i forgot the fouter and then connected again, but it still wont open safari.

I am having a very similar problem with my new itouch.
I was able to surf the net via Safari on my itouch Christmas morning but have been unable to do so since then.
I am still able to access YouTube, as well as the itunes store, but safari will not open any websites.
Since YouTube and itunes are working, my network connection is obviously working.
Can anyone provide any insight as to why Safari will not work it would be appreciated.

I'm having the same issues as most people here and whilst I appreciate the help offered by the contributors to this board I have a limited understanding of the terms and settings referred to. This was precisely one of the reasons for changing to Apple - user-friendliness.

I don't understand how a friend can visit my house with a Windows laptop and get into my network without me having to change any of the settings or security levels, yet I cannot connect with my Apple product which is designed for the purpose.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me in layman's terms what the problem may be -
I am using a wireless modem (that should read router) connecting my computer to the internet with Airport. My modem needs a password and I have that, along with all the DNS settings and IP address but even with all that information keyed into my iPod I can't connect - I get the "cannot find the server" message.

As someone has mentioned in another post about this problem, this isn't some cheap and nasty product I'm trying to use - this Apple product cost a lot of money, and it is disappointing to say the least to not be able to use the product from the box.

As someone else mentioned, maybe Apple should consider a software patch or update to fix this problem - it seems to be VERY common !

have you checked the wifi settings on your ipod to see what the address listed for your dns server is. Try entering in the same address that is listed for the router. Of course renew ip address and restart ipod just for good measure after this. If this doesn't work you can also try entering 208.67.222.222 which is a open dns server. You can confirm that you are having problems with dns by opening up safari on the ipod and entering 17.112.152.32 this is the ip address for www.apple.com.

Using the open DNS worked after a restart of my itouch.

I have the same problem with a D-Link router and an iPod Touch.
Wifi connection with WPA encryption and http proxy in the lan works fine for several days, then the iPod can no longer connect to wifi.

Resetting the network settings was not helpful and deleting the stored network and reenter the (correct) passphrase neither. One thing that worked: changing the SSID on the router: at the same moment the iPod could connect again.

This clearly seems to be a bug in the iPod software. I don't want to change my router SSID from time to time, cause other computers are using the wifi network too.

Why should i factory reset my router if other computers work seamless and only the iPod makes trouble? That's not an solution, that's not even a bugfix. This idea is asking for more trouble because you have to reconfigure the complete router, all settings, just to get one iPod working. What about a second or third iPod in the same network, will you redo this steps every time?

I've been trawling the Internet looking for answers for this problem, eventually I found a solution, but don't know if it applies to everyone.

So, my iPod Touch wouldn't connect to my WiFi network, regardless of Security settings (WEP, WPA, None).

Now, my SSID was set to "Kate's Place" (without quotes).
When I changed the SSID to "KATE", without any security, the iTouch linked! EUREKA!

I then changed the SSID to "KATESPLACE", enabled WEP 128-bit and entered the 26-digit key displayed and hit "Join".

Lo and behold, a successful connection and a browsing iTouch.

So, who knows, maybe there's a magic formula in the SSID name that needs to be met, maybe Apple WiFi doesn't understand anything but Alphanumerics and doesn;t allow special characters like space, ,.;:" etc.

Hope this helps all those others out there that were losing hope and sanity over this.

Hmm, just chars and digits in our SSID, even if it's random generated. No special characters at all.

It worked ... for some days.

Firstly, looking at the posts on here and other places via Google, it seems that Apple have a serious problem here.

Secondly, it seems that as a purchaser of an iPod Touch, I get one phone call (to be taken within 90 days of purchase) of support and that's it - no email support, nothing.

Now to the problem others seem to be having. I have a wireless router configured with WPA security and MAC address filtering. I have 2 different branded Windows based laptop computers and a Nintendo Wii connected to it without problem. Apple's easy to use iPod Touch - no way!

The results of my tests have shown that if I disable the security, I can connect perfectly; Safari browsing and YouTube access no problem. So it's not a MAC address filtering issue. If I enable WEP security (64bit Hex), I can connect perfectly; Safari browsing and YouTube access no problem. If I enable WPA security (with the up to 63 character passphrase) no chance. Is this what others are seeing? If you can't get WPA to work, temporarily bump the security on your wireless router down to WEP (or even nothing) and see if that works. Let us all (and Apple if they bother to read these forum postings) know the extent of this problem. I'm not going to compromise the security of my network just for Apple. I didn't do it for the Nintendo DS which doesn't support WPA and I won't do it for the iPod Touch. I'm waiting to see if there's a solution that turns up soon or it's unfit for purpose.

I forgot to mention, my SSID included spaces. I tried removing them to no avail, I also made the wireless router hide the SSID to force the iPod Touch to let me enter the form of security via the 'Choose a network...' -> 'Others...' menu entry, incase this was the cause of the problem. Nothing made any difference to the results listed above.

Well, there's tons of ways to configure wireless computing, and Apple certainly can not offer 100% compatibility for every possible setup.
If you look at a LOT of these posts, many people have found answers, and most are configuration-oriented.
Others are because some folks no little or nothing about computers.
I personally have had zero troubles connecting to every network I need - home, work, coffee shops.

So, while it's easy to yell at Apple, it's more a combination of things and takes some time to work out.,

I feel I'm close, but not following everything here - too much of a novice, I guess. My ipod touch isn't connecting with my Linksys network- "can't find server." Strong signal, though. I know that my router is Data encrypted, WEP enabled (whatever that means.)

IP address listed in itouch starts with 169 - that doesn't match the one listed on my router config. Change it on the itouch?
Subnet mask matches.
router - doesn't list anything on the itouch.
DNS - doesn't list anything on my itouch. Per my router config, DNS is 0.0.0.0
client id - do I fill in anything there? If so, what?

I also have a WEP Network key - a string of letters and numbers. Di I need that for anything?

Looking for real simple, step-by-step instructions for a non-computer literate person.
