Oversaturated photos in iPhoto 08

Whenever I import or view photos in iPhoto 08 it applies the Camera RGB Profile and makes all my photos look oversaturated and red-ish. I attempted to change my camera's colorsync profile within the colorsync utility then I checked "embed colorsync profile" in iPhoto, but iPhoto still applies Camera RGB Profile. If I do not edit images in iPhoto the do not get saved with this colorsync profile, however if you do any type of editing in iPhoto they get saved with that profile. THIS IS EXTREMELY ANNOYING! The thumbnails look normal (as in, they dont have the Camera RGB Profile, they have no profile), but then when you double click, they get bigger and for a split second look normal, then they turn oversaturated.

I found the profile in my system files and deleted it (dont worry i saved a copy just incase.) This fixed the problem when viewing photos in iPhoto, as it no longer embedded Camera RGB Profile and the photos looked how they are supposed to, but iPhoto crashes everytime I try to import photos with the profile deleted from the frameworks folder.

P.S. I had almost the same exact problem with iPhoto 06. However, if I recall correctly, the Camera RGB Profile was not buried in the frameworks folder. After deleting that file for 06, I never had a problem. But in 08, it crashes every time I try to import.

PLEASE HELP! and let me know if anyone else if having this problem

I too am very disappointed with the way that iPhoto '08 has "darkened" all of my pictures. It's a great relief to know that I'm not the only one that is experiencing this disparity of color.

To further make my case, I offer the following screenshot. The photo was taken with a Canon Rebel XT with the sRGB color profile. iPhoto's representation of the photo is in the window on top, while Preview's is on the bottom. In comparison, iPhoto makes the photo look underexposed.

I'm a loyal Apple fan, and I'm usually one to give Apple the benefit of the doubt. I own several Macs, several iPods, an iPhone, legit copies of OS X Tiger and Leopard, iLife 08, and iWork. I recommend them to everyone I meet, and I love showing them off. But I refuse to use iPhoto again until I can find a solution (or a reasonable explanation) to this issue.

Not the answer, but could be helpful:

I've just discovered the contrast slider in Preferences/Universal Access. Setting this to normal has made my photos look so much better. I'd not touched this setting, it just applied itself after I installed Leopard and iLife 08.

The difference between the thumbnails and when I open the photo is still there but not as dramatic.

I agree, this problem is very frustrating.

What seems to be happening is that the color profiles mismatch. Your display is assigned one profile (Color LCD usually), then the image is tagged with a different profile, (sRGB). The stupid thing about it is that the whole REASON for these profiles is to ensure uniform color consistency, but all it ends up doing is making everything look messed up--contrast is too high, colors are oversaturated, etc.

At this point, the only thing I've been able to figure out is that you can fix the problem by taking each image and retagging them with the color profile you have chosen for your display. Don't "match to profile," simply reassign a new profile.

I don't understand why color management is so horribly convoluted. It is really simple, but whoever designed these "color profiles" have done a bad job explaining how to use them, and they are not well implemented. Your average user is not going to be able to work with them. A more intelligent, simple approach is needed.

Same problem in all programs including Lightroom and photoshop which makes it impossible to accurately edit. If anyone has any new news on this. Pray tell?
