Sony DCR-TRV950 compatibility with iMovie

I have a Sony DCR-TRV950 that I've recorded many movies on. I have a MacBook now with a built in iLink port, so I finally decided to purchase the firewire cable to transfer my movies. I'm hooking up everything as stated in iMovie help and my TRV950 manual, but I can't seem to get them to communicate. I try to select the camera from the pull down menu and there's nothing there...just the selection for the iSight camera. At this point, I'm just wondering if my Sony TRV950 is compatible AT ALL with iMovie (v. 6.0.3).

Someone...anyone...please help!

Judging from its specs (which I have just looked at) there should be no reason why it wouldn't work, as it is a miniDV camera which is what iMovie requires.

Try this:

Open the Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder) and set the default audio output to 44100hZ. Try the camera again. Also, make sure your camera audio output is 16 bit and not 12 bit.

If no luck try these:

iMovie: Cannot See or Control Camera

A Sony fix is suggested here:

Well, I went to the pages you suggested and did make some adjustments in hopes of them solving the problem. They didn't work, but they did help me to notice a minor detail that might have something to do with the problem. On the Sony TRV950, the LCD display indicates that I have a firewire cable connected to an active device by displaying "DV IN" on the screen. What I've noticed, since I've tried using it, is that it sort of "flickers." It appears and goes away sporadically. I even noticed in the menu when I went to configure the so-called iLink, there is a section called "ADJ TEST" and I can't seem to select it because it, as well, flickers in the same manner. I'm continuing to look for discussions on this camera to see if this is a common problem, but logic leads me to believe that I may have a bad connection in the cable itself.

Any comment...or idea of what to do at this point? 🙂

Yes, I do have the manual for the camera, but I tried to look up the different topics on the iLink connection and the LCD displays themselves and couldn't really find anything to relate. I suppose I can try to look through the options on the camera and look for a DV OUT of some sort. I just wish the manual was a bit more expansive on it's iLink/firewire information.

No, the only thing have to hook it up to is a simple AC/DC power adapter...no extra plugs or anything on it. I'm still trying to look up these problems. I HAVE found, however, that a few other people have also had the same issue with their Sony camcorders. I have yet to find a way to change it to "DV OUT". There is an "A/V to DV OUT" option through the menu, but that implies a through connection using the A/V hookup through the camera to a computer/device (usually used for converting VHS tapes and stuff). I tried it and it still didn't work. I'm at wit's end. I'm going to try it with a friend of mine's computer and with my mom's computer (if one or the other doesn't work). It could be my port and it could be the cable. I really just don't know.
