Dual Layer DVDs not recognized - ejected automatically

I have an Intel based iMac with a super-drive (system profiler says MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846) which says it can burn +R DL DVDs.

Today I tried to burn a DL DVD for the first time and found out that it doesn't recognize them. It makes noises like it's trying to mount the disc but then simply ejects it after about 15 or 20 second without any sort of error message. I just checked it out and the drive will read/write to all other formats except for the DVD R-DL (CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-RWs, etc.). The discs are Verbatim so I don't think it's a problem with the discs.

I've tried all of the simple solutions like restarting, restarting holding option-command-P-R, and repairing disc permissions. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get these DL DVDs to work properly?

I recently inherited the computer but I believe it's about 2 years old (it was one of the early Intel based iMacs). Even though I haven't owned it for it's entire life I do know that the optical drive has not been used very much to burn discs. I would guess it's burned less than 10. As far as I can tell the drive works fine with all media except for the DL DVD-R.
