OK called Apple they had me shut down the mac. Then they had me plug the iphone usb device into another usb port. While the Mac was shut down they also had me hold down the on/off button and the home button to turn off the iphone and then restart holding down the on/off button and the home button...this didn't work...mac finally recogonised the iphone but said that it belonged to a different library....took mac off usb port. Then I held down the on/off button and the home button to turn off the iphone and then restarted it by holding down the on/off button, the home button AND the volume up button...display went wacky with lots of colorful lines then the apple icon came up and when I went to synch the iphone all seems well. I will let you know if I synch well or not...

synched just fine! So... 1st turn off your mac. put the iphone usb into a different usb port. Turn mac on again. Launch itunes. Next turn off iphone holding down home and on/off button. Turn back on holding down on/off button, home button and volume up. Screen may look funny...lots of small threads of color running up and down screen....release volume up keep holding down home and on/off button till apple logo appears...then while iTunes is open seat iphone in usb device and it should synch fine...mine did!

**** prob persists initially the mac let me synch back and for forth once (so at least I got to back up) when I went to verify with another synch it imported the pics (this time without the color bands) but iTunes didn't recognize the iphone and came back Called back apple and they said that it was only USB 2.0 compatible looking for USB 2.0 board...keep ya posted

I had the exact same trouble, after hours of web search + various trials I found this TIP :

1) Plug on your iPhone on the USB port +(mine is USB1.0)+
2) Launch iPhoto (your iPhone will appears as a camera) - import a picture (may be not necessary)
3) Quit iPhoto (that's all - iPhoto seems to establish the expected Connexion/Sync with iPhone)
4) Lauch iTunes = you must see your iPhone then _Synchronisation works all modes_

It works fine with my iMAC : USB 1.0 iTune 7.5 and iPhone, its appears to be stable and repetitive !
If this fix it for you too, the issue might be around H/W communication set-up for pictures/movies and Apple should fix it with a new patch...

Please confirm !

Effigie

Note : there is full compatibility with USB 1.0, but commuication is slower

There is nothing to fix. The iPhone is DESIGNED to work with USB2.0 not USB 1.1. The fact that you've found a way to get it to work with 1.1 is just luck on your part. Just be aware that any iPhone updates may break this in the future.
