Apple Laserwriter Select 360 printer

I have an Apple Laswerwriter Select 360 which I would like to use with either my Apple PPC G5 (2.7 ghz; OS 10.4.11; 3 gb ram) OR my more recently purchased Intel Mac Book Pro (2.2 ghz, OS 10.4.11; 2 gb ram). 1) I believe, from what I've read, that I can hook up these machines to this printer; but I don't really know hoe to accomplish this hook up. (I own several Macs and have an Airport wireless connection via a Linksys router which currently allows me to use several wireless printers. Can someone please provide me with the necessary steps to utilize this old, but still viable printer? Thanks.

George,

Yes, that printer is still a viable printer. I use two on a regular basis. However, it is expensive to supply. Do yourself a favor and find an ethernet capable printer for less than the cost of a new toner cartrige for the 360. Yes, whole printers ( ie. the 16/600 ) cost less than toner for out dated printers.

Our local university computer surplus store had 360 printers for $35 and 16/600 printers for $25. I bought five 600s and passed them out to family and put one each in the kid's bedrooms for printing homework. Toner? $25. Toner for the 360? $75. time to shop around and use the 360 on a still very capable G3 that sells for $10. BTW, the 360s were never sold until they were put on a pallet at the auction. The only bid was for $2.50 for a box of Mac mice. The guy gave me all the printers just to haul them off for him.

Caveat. Prices like that assume that you are close to a university or large city that recycles. Post back with a city near you if you want shopping ideas. Otherwise, you will need to shop eBay for appletalk to ethernet adapters. Be prepared to spend more for less.

Using Apple printers in Mac OS X:
These printers are QuickDraw-only printers, do not use AppleTalk, and cannot be "recognized" or "identified" in the usual way. If you cannot get one of these to print by just sending data to it, it will not be useable under Mac OS X.

LaserWriter IISC (SCSI)
Personal LaserWriter SC (SCSI)
Personal LaserWriter LS (Serial only)
Personal LaserWriter 300 (Serial only)
LaserWriter Select 300 (Serial only)

Apple made no apology for dropping support for the LaserWriter Select 310 in OS 8.5. It is a serial or parallel Postscript printer with no LocalTalk capability. This printer is NOT supported by the linux foundation driver.

LaserWriter Select 310 -- Postscript level 1 only; serial/parallel only

These Printers are Postscript level 1 printers that can be identified and used under the Linux-Foundation Postscript level 1 driver. All these printers are LocalTalk printers. They also need a converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk to print in Mac OS X.

LaserWriter
LaserWriter Plus
LaserWriter IINT
LaserWriter IINTX
Personal LaserWriter NT

These are Postscript level 2 printers that do not support LPR/LPD. All these printers are LocalTalk printers. Except for those marked (Ethernet) they also need a converter from AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk to print in Mac OS X.

Personal LaserWriter NTR
Personal LaserWriter 320
LaserWriter Select 360
LaserWriter 4/600 PS

LaserWriter IIf
LaserWriter IIg (Ethernet)
LaserWriter Pro 600
LaserWriter Pro 630 (Ethernet)

Apple LaserWriter Printers with Ethernet and Built-in LPD:

LaserWriter 8500 (Ethernet)
LaserWriter 12/640 PS (Ethernet)
Color LaserWriter 12/660 PS (Ethernet)
Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS (Ethernet)
LaserWriter 16/600PS (Ethernet)
LaserWriter Pro 810 (Ethernet)

Thank you. I've had this printer quite a while and as I progressed from G3 to G4 and now a G5 the printer fell into disuse. I have an almost full toner cartridge and a brand new one still in the box that I certainly did not wish to go to waste. Once these are gone the printer will probably be disposed of by me. I have several other printers that have carried the load for me quite well over the years... I just sought a method of getting every bit of use out of the Lasrwriter 360 that I could. Again, thank you for your courteous reply and suggestions.

The two protocol converters available are the Farralon Ethermac IPrint LT (not LS, which is for certain StyleWriters only) and the Asante Asantetalk. Both are available on the used market and the Asante is sometimes available new. There is also some unsupported Apple software that runs in the background on an old Mac that has both a serial port for AppleTalk/LocalTalk and an Ethernet port for AppleTalk-over-Ethernet.

Grant,

Wow, lots of information regarding the Apple printers... I was kinda surprised that they stopped supporting the laserwriters when they did (forced me to look into new printer options). Still, I have this perfectly healthy printer with a brand new toner cartridge still in the box that I just can't conceive if pitching. Thank you also for the heads-up on the converters available... I'll be looking for them so I can squeeze out the last bit of printing from my laserwriter. Please accept my sincerest "thank you" for taking to the time to help... it is truly appreciated.
