Internet Explorer 5.1.7

Hi,

I've got bit of a problem with my Internet explorer.
It won't load some of the menu buttons/bars properly and also when I click on some buttons it won't take take me to the links.
This is really frustrating. Is there maybe a plug-in or something that will fix this problem? And can someone also tell me how I can get hold of the text/plain plug-in.

Hope everything makes sence...

I went to the article and read it including what i've copied below.

When i click download will it take care of everything for me? or are there tricks?? I've not done something like this before, obviously.

I use faxstf 6 which the article seems to say might cause some problems.

But, it appears that it needs to be updated...

Thanks,
Mrs H

Installation:

MRJ 2.2.5 can only be installed in a disk or partition which contains a Mac OS 8 or 9 System Folder. If you are installing on a system that has both Mac OS 8 or 9 and Mac OS X disks or partitions, the installer may default to the Mac OS X partition. If this happens, use the "Switch Disk" button to select a Mac OS 8 or 9 system disk on which to install MRJ.

MRJ Cache

The "MRJ Cache", introduced in MRJ 2.2.3, has been moved from "System Folder:Preferences" to "System Folder:Application Support". In most cases, the MRJ Installer will move your existing cache for you. See the following section for the most common exception. Even when the installer does not move an obsolete "MRJ Cache" folders it will cause no problems apart from taking up disk space.

For more information on managing the "MRJ Cache" see the Developer Technical Q&A at http://developer.apple.com/qa/java/java27.html

Hi, Mrs H -

"FWIW" is short-talk for "For what it's worth".

The MRJ download is like most Apple downloads; it will not automatically install itself - you will need to perform a few actions to make that happen.

When you download it, it should auto-decompress to a .smi disk image file type, in this case one named "MRJ 2.2.5.smi".

Double-click the MRJ 2.2.5.smi file; this will mount the disk image contained by that file - a new icon will appear on the right-hand side of the desktop named "MRJ Install"/

Double-click the disk image MRJ Install to open it (the OS treats such a mounted disk image as if it were a disk). Inside will be a couple of files and a couple of folders. Read the Readme "About MRJ 2.2.5" if you wish - it should say much the same as the text on the download page for that item. When you're ready to install it, just double-click the file named "Installer" and follow the prompts.

Good luck -

Found it - thanks for the link. I couldn't find the OS 9 choice before.

What are all the choices under US - does it come up with the appropriate one selected or am I somehow to know?

Someone else mentioned that Opera was slow - do you find it so? And is it's search like IE? I can't stand the search in Netscape - it takes two or three levels before you get anywhere - but I suspect I still haven't figured out how to use it - I just give up in disgust each time and just use if for those cranky sites that don't work with IE.

Looks like I have to update the MJR following Don's advice and also update to IE 5.1.7.

I don't do this sort of stuff on weekends - just in case there's a major crisis - not that I have anyone to turn to on a weekday either.

Thanks again,
Mrs H

PS What's a guy with OS X doing helping out us OS 9 holdouts ?? - thanks 🙂

Hi Mrs H !

The US listing is just one of the many download mirror sites for Opera.........

The one listed looks to be the nearest one, it should be fine........

I've liked Opera since I first downloaded it a few years ago, in fact, I liked it so much for use in OS 9.1, that I bought a license for it.........

It's skinnable (meaning that you can download a different appearance for it, there are a hundred or skins for it, downloadable through the Opera Preferences).....

You can also enlarge or reduce the webpage font on the fly for easier viewing........

It also has a slightly different "Feel" to it, but I like it.......

I've never found it to be quite as fast as they claim, but it is fast, and they have come a long way in the webpage/internet compatability standards for Opera......

The first version of opera I used was a bit buggy, but is very well put together now....

If you decide that you don't like it, just drag the Opera folder to the trash..........

"PS What's a guy with OS X doing helping out us OS 9 holdouts..........."

I did my Mac "growing up" in the pre-OS X forums (back in the days when eww and Mary W were "Helpers"), and even now only use OS X reluctantly, knowing that in 5-7 years OS 9 will be about as useful as 7.5 is now (hard truth)........

<sheilds himself from rocks, tomatoes, rotten tangerines, etc., thrown by OS 9 devotees>

OS 9 will probably be around for many years to come, as my G3 now runs 9.2.2 exclusively, and my G4 dual boots 9.2.2 and X.........

I'll run OS 9 'til its dead and gone............and then run it some more........

I have a problem with Internet Explorer on my iMac 9.2.2 and regarding Yahoo email. They are requesting that I upgrade from IE 5.1 to Apple Safari or Mozilla Firefox but that requires me having OS 10. The problem is that I can't contact Yahoo for any problems because when I get to the page where you fill out your information requesting help, the screen freezes. I'm not having problems getting on the internet and my email but
these requests about the upgrades keep coming up on the first page of my email and sooner or later, I predict that there will be a problem. Is upgrading to OS 10 my only option. I got off AOL because of this very same thing only it got pretty bad because I couldn't download any digitals or access some internet sites. Any ideas.

Patricia Perry,

Is upgrading to OS 10 my only option.

If it is not now, it will be. I just had a similar experience trying to help a friend set up a new highspeed DSL account. Nothing we did to activate the account worked, so we resorted to calling the service provider's tech support. The tech person blithely told us our problems were because they no longer supported OS 9 browsers!! (Fortunately my friend owns a copy of OS 10.3 and we installed it and all is well.)

Surely this type of non-support is going to become even more widespread.

Upgrading an iMac will mean buying the OS and perhaps also increasing the RAM. And you will be paying fees to the person doing the upgrades.

As part of your decision making when the time comes to upgrade, I suggest you also evaluate the option of buying a new Mac instead of upgrading the iMac. A Mac Mini for example, comes with the latest OS already installed. (You will need a monitor and a keyboard as well.) And you might be able to trade in the iMac to recoup some of the costs of a new machine.

All other things being equal, a new computer is a better investment than upgrading an older one.

Patricia, I also have SBC Yahoo DSL & use OS 9.2.2. When I used IE 5.1.7 I also got the msg about Safari & Mozilla Firefox. I just ignored the msg.

I have switched to Mozilla for OS 9.x & like it better than IE. Mozilla has a pop-up ad blocker, a password manager & displays some sites that IE has problems with.

Get Wamcom's Mozilla browser. Download at:
