Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS, eyetv, underpowered usb2

I have a Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS which EyeTv (latest version). EyeTv says it needs to be plugged into a usb2 port. The device is plugged into a usb2 port (on the back of the iMac).

It used to work fine on OS 10.4 right upto 10.4.8 (or thereabouts). 10.4.9 and 10.4.10 were flakey (had to restart, turn the Mac off for 10 mins, swap usb plugs round etc). 10.4.11 was fine. I'm running 10.5.1 now and the problem is back. I'm thinking that this might have something to do with the the device not getting enough power.

Saw elsewhere a fix reinstalling IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
( http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=333564). Haven't tried this yet-does anyone have any thoughts on my problem?

It turned out that my Cinergy stick is defect and needs to be replaced 😟
I get the annoying USB2 message every time I reboot and the same thing happens when I unpluck the Cynergy from the bus for a short time. In my case the only way to get it back to life is to heat up the unplugged stick with a hair drier and then plug it back on the usb-bus. With that procedure everything works fine again unless I don't quit EyeTV, unplug the stick or shutdown/reboot.
