Original 02R and control surface

Dear Logic Users,

This is a brilliant forum! I've always been amazed by the knowledge of everyone out there.

This time, I have a really tricky problem to solve.

I've obtained a Yamaha 02R and I wish to use it as a control surface in Logic. Although it's not directly supported, I've read you can use the learn features of Logic to connect via midi.

I also have a MOTU Midi Express XT.

When I select menu Apple Pro Logic --> Preferences --> Control Surfaces --> Learn parameter 'no parameter selected' or 'controller assignments' and learn

The motu midi express seems to beam the synchronisation tick without giving me chance to move a fader on my 02R.

Does anyone know how I can disable this feature in my MOTU.

Or - does anyone know how i can setup a port and parameter I can learn.

I know I've got a long way to go, but any help here would be amazing.

Kind regards,

Andrew

Hi,

Try and see if the 02R uses the Mackie HUI protocol, or some other MIDI controller protocol. This should make things easier setting it up as a "hui" or other controller in Logic.

Also, try turning off MTC sending from Logic, in the MIDI preferences. This should stop the synch "tick" or whatever that is...

Thirdly, make sure the 02R is installed properly in the Audio MIDI Setup application. (Under the Utility folder in your Applications folder). The 02R device should be configured according to the manual, as far as sending and receiving the right MIDI data.

Cheers

Hi noeqplease,

Thank you for your help. I've examined the logic preferences and I don't think the sync transmit messahe is coming from Logic.

The MOTU MIDI Express XT has 7 IN ports and 8 OUT ports. The mssing 8th port seems to be a sync. Therefore, there must be some way of switching this off using a MOTU driver. However, I'm not sure how to do this.

I think I should create a new post dedicated to this issue, then come back to this thread.

Thank you for your help,

Andrew

Hi noeqplease,

I've accidently turned off the sync port. I don't know how.

I can now use the 'learn' function perfectly.

Unfortunately, I don't have the Mackie HUI (Human User Interface) protocol.

My next question is this:

I've learnt the fader movement - how do I now make the Logic fader move?

Do I need to send the midi message somewhere?

Cheers,

Andy

Hi everyone,

I've spent a good deal of time reading information from the Sound On Sound website and LUG forums. I've started to get the general idea of how I can use the 02R as a control surface.

Even better, I've found the template by Chip Sloan and, I've also found a template to control my E-MU E4XT Ultra.

I've been using Logic for years, and I didn't realise it had such powerful midi control facilities. I am very impressed.

My main problem concerns communication between the 02R and Logic via the template.

I can't get it to connect.

The E4XT Ultra template works without any modification.

With channel ID 1. I'm wondering if there are any settings in the 02R I may have to examine?

Thank you for your help,

Andy

Currently, my settings in the Yam 02R are as follows:

Currently, my 02R settings are as follows:

SETUP button --> 3/4

Transmit Key Remote - selected
MIDI Warning OFF - unselected
Insert Tx Bulk Wait - selected

SETUP button --> 4/4

Touch sense select- selected
Tx 02R Link Message - selected
Rx 02R Link Message - selected

MIDI button --> 1/5

Receive Channel: 1
Enable
Prgoram Change
Parameter Chg.
Control Change

Transmit Channel: 1

Enable
Program Change
Parameter Chg.

Omni

Program Change

Echo

Program Change - unselected

Maybe I need to link these to the transmit and receive in Logic? would anyone know how to do this?

Thanks

Andy
