iPod stuck on "Do Not Disconnect"- no recognition from itunes or finder

I've had my 5th generation iPod for almost 2 years now and I've never had this happen. I went to plug in my ipod since I haven't used it for a while and it needed to be charged before I headed home from school on Thursday. I plugged it in to my USB port and as it said "Do not disconnect" I noticed that the lock was on so I went to move it to the other side. This is when the ipod just completely locked up on me. I have no response from the ipod nor does my itunes or finder recognize that the ipod is connected to my macbook.

Anyone know what will help?

I've done that because that has always helped me in the past, but it doesn't respond to anything right now. I went through the entire procedure on "Typical ways to fix ipod" on the main support menu, which included restarting, checking if itunes was current version, etc. but I have had no response. The only thing I haven't done is restore the ipod and check the ipod for updates, because I can't do that because it isn't recognizing.

Try Resetting your iPod. Toggle the hold switch off and on a few times then hold down the MENU and SELECT (centre) buttons for five or ten seconds until you see the Apple logo appear then the menu button to go to the normal display: iPod isn't responding it appears to be frozen

iPod missing in iTunes and Mac desktop

I'm having a similar problem but it appears I have iTunes 7.6 and a 5th generation 80g iPod. Been syncing it to my new MacBook with OS 10.5.2. Originally iPod was configured for PC but I had no problems after the change to the Mac. Seems like the problem syncing has started after downloading the latest update software for Leopard (to the 10.5.2) which included other things in the download (perhaps also Quicktime and iTunes?) This problem with not being recognized in iTunes happened twice in one week - only way to get it going was to do a reset while it was still plugged into the computer (cause it said do not disconnect) but the second time it took many tries and holding down the menu & select for a very long time. It finally was recognized and the sync started. This has me very worried and I don't think the 5Rs and other troubleshooting suggestions are the issue (it was fully charged & I've used the USB ports for other devices with no problems, etc.) Please advise. Can't give it up to service for over a week 'cause going on a trip and sure hope it will continue to work.
