From Windows PC AA I can see folders shared from Windows PC BB and also see and use the HP Laserjet 1020 shared from Windows PC BB. From the Mac I am able to see folders shared from Windows PC BB. But I CANNOT see (or use) the HP Laserjet 1020? I tried adding a printer when printing on the Mac (Tiger)and could get to the Windows Network and find Windows PC BB - but the printer does not get listed. Using the same steps I am able to see and use a printer on Windows PC AA. What gives? How can I delete all references, keychains etc. to Windows PC BB and start again (assuming that may be the issue)? Error messages or log entries as to why this is failing would be nice.
Take a look at these two iFelix articles below, maybe you have just overlooked something simple! The first one walks you thru the steps with the printer connect to the PC sharing with the iMac. The second is turned around with the printer connected to the iMac sharing with the PC.
Dennis, thanks - a very good and easy to use article. But...
I followed the directions exactly and the printer is still is invisible to Mac yet visible to the other PC on my home network. I did get some more information by turning on security logging at the Windows PC that won't show its printer - the apparently successful logon from the MAC is coming in as "guest" and NOT as the the username I use when I try to add the printer on the mac; so there must be some weird interaction between the Windows and MAC security systems?
From the Administrative tools I can see the Mac logged in as an administrator from the Mac printer utility. Also I can share a folder on Windows and when the Mac logs in, it can read it. Yet the printer does not appear on the Mac via ADDing on the printer utility (following all the right steps). Are there some printers that the Mac won't allow a share-to? Seems very unlikely. Perhaps Windows-XP won't allow a Mac to access its printers? That cannot be true either since the Mac does access a printer on the other Windows system I have. So....
I found the problem - Windows share names for printers have to be 12 characters or less otherwise the Mac does not "see" them. Seems a very poor implementation since there is no error message on the Mac - just a blank screen indicating that there are no shared printers on the Windows system.
